At long last!

Sucks that shooting RAW is pointless until Adobe updates their programs to be compatible with this model. Oh well at least I can work on most of the review. I have the next two days off.

You can still use Capture NX-D when you shoot RAW and export those as TiFF. That's a lossless format.

Hmm, interesting. Do they upload to websites like JPEGs?

I'm afraid not since their file size is massive (>100Mb for an uncompressed) but you can export them as JPEG after editing or you can edit the RAW in Capture and export them as JPEG.

Capture NX-D isn't a bad editor to do the first work for RAW. It gets little attention since everyone is using LR or others but Nikon soft can do a decent first edit and the advantage is you'll always have the Nikon colors right. It will always render your RAW accurately since only Nikon knows how to correctly read and convert it. The other editors use an own interpretation of your cam profiles and NEF. Not that such does lead to worse results.

Cut or copy the NEF files from the camera or SD card, paste in a folder of your choice.

Open the NEF files with View NX and convert to TIF with the destination folder of your choice.

Now you can work with the TIF files in Adobe software. Did your new camera come with a View NX dvd? If not, it can be downloaded at the Nikon site.

I've been using View NX since I got my D3100.

The new versions are pretty ok. View has become a viewer and for any edit, it'll open the shot in the new Capture. Even when they're still memory hogs, the latest version of Capture does seem have a cache limit you can set which actually works. There's still funkiness on my Mac with most Nikon-ware but I'm not 100% sure it is Nikon that's being funky.

I only use it for basic edits but that's all I really do in terms of post-processing.

Also, I managed to go out for a bit and try the new camera out. Images aren't really exciting as there wasn't much to shoot but it was a good way to get used to how different it is compared to my old D3100.
