Here I am adding two photos, one that is basically straight out of camera and one that I have edited quickly, please inform me if I have done the right thing.

I like them both with a slight edge to the cropped. If you would have had a remote flash fire under the trees on the left then the first probably.

I like them both, the white of the cloud in the 1st one, and the clarity of the stars and the night sky in the second shot.

Second. Both are good... I do think the trees in the foreground detract from the second shot. I also understand that the shot may not have been possible to take without those trees in the foreground. (Just my $0.02 worth.)

I'm looking forward to possibly getting out to take some lightning shots this summer. I would be pleased to do half-as-well as you do.

I still like the second shot. I LIKE the purplish colouring in the clouds :D and the sky was nicer in that shot

That's it!, my thoughts exactly, the brains an amazing thing, what you consciously think about a shot is only a fraction of what it works out to tell you what 'feels' right, particularly with colour temperature. The orange tint in the clouds isn't normally possible in nature at this time of night because we just know the sun is on the other side of the planet to us, so our brain says "mmmm like it but..."
Whereas the more neutral colour in this gives it that natural dirty dramatic and sinister and 'Clean air' look that we know is 'real'.
Fantastic shot mate, I want one!
