Nikon D5300 producing black images after using macro extension

Hello guys. I need help. I have a Nikon D5300 and I am trying to use it with a macro extension tube. After i have put the tube, in the viewfinder I can see a proper exposure and I am also getting the macro effect but after I click the picture the screen only shows a black image. I think it has something to do with the aperture settings, and it seems the the lens is stuck at the highest aperture settings and hence very less light is able to pass through it. How do I prevent the lens from getting stuck at the highest F stop. I have also experimented with setting the lowest aperture before removing the lens from the camera but it doesn't help. Kindly advise.

Please provide images with EXIF data, I am presuming you are not getting enough light on the subject. Try using flash or upping your ISO. You also may need a aperture ring if your lens does not have one.

Or you could try this paper trick.

If the lens has no manual aperture, it'll shut close the moment it is disconnected or attached to a ring that does not communicate with the lens.

You need an extension ring that allows communication between the lens and cam. Another option is trying to find the small lever on the lens that controls aperture and insert something while it is open.

I think that you should go out and get the proper extension rings. Kenko extension rings DO have the electronic contacts to get all lens information to the camera. Older rings that don't are best used with older D type lenses that have an aperture ring. Stuffing paper into the lens to block the aperture lever is not a very practical solution in my opinion.

There was a YouTube vid of I guy who drilled a hole in it and used a paper clip to make a manual apature control. But I can't find it. I saw if months and months ago.

Ok I will try that and get back, what is strange to me is that the viewfinder and lcd both show a proper macro image before clicking but the moment I click, I get a black picture.

I assume the D5300 has no exposure preview and what you see on the LCD is the same as what is in the viewfinder. If you want that image, you still have to set the exposure correctly.

Try setting it to a long duration shutter like 10 seconds or more. If exposure is the problem, it should no longer be black and possible be overexposed. If needed set ISO high too. Now you see the image through the lens while constantly open which is something else completely than a shot which is only exposed a limited amount of time.
