I think you're loving that camera, Ted. Takes great pictures with that 55mm on it! I'm impressed!

It is a wonderful lens and the more I use it, the less I care about getting any other lenses. I know that's not normal, but this is a quality do-it-all lens. Great close-up ability and I can stitch wide landscapes.

Who'd a-thunk it!

I got it off eBay from Japan. That saved me almost $200, but it still rang out at $738. For more examples of the lens, go to Today's Trip to the Hillsboro Inlet (A7II & 55/1.8)

It was this lens that first attracted me to the Sony system, not the other way around. :indecisiveness:

You made a wise decision. The lens is awesome and so is the camera. I think you found a winning combo! I checked out your photos on the link you provided. They are tack sharp!

Did you see pictures from the 55mm first or read an article? It's a fantastic piece of gl-ass! Really nice images! I went through the whole series from the beginning. I love your shooting style. I wish I had such a great area to shoot in. We do have a lake up the road, so I guess I'll have to visit, but nothing as spectacular as South Florida.

Yes. I stumbled on to an article that boasted the 55/1.8 at OTIS quality levels. That claim interested me and the more I read, the more I wanted this lens. As far as a vehicle, the A7 appeared to be perfect. I followed your posts and on-line articles. Then, all of a sudden, the A7II and A9 hit the headlines. I decided the Mark 2 was the camera I wanted and as they, it's all history now.

I was becoming more and more dependent on a tripod for sharpness-confidence.

Side-by-side, my D800-50/1.8 will out perform my A7II-55/1.8 (under a microscope), but the A7II's ability to freeze shots far surpasses my Nikon VR lenses.

The A7II gives me much more opportunity to take candid, walk-about, or unplanned shots.

If I will shoot a dedicated, planned, target, I will set up my D800.

The A7II is doing exactly what I had hoped and exactly the purpose for which it was designed.

And as far as subjects are concerned, I enjoy shooting in Ohio much more than Florida. I love the architecture and diversity of subjects. In Florida, I have to return to earlier targets and figure out new angles, etc. I guess that's good academically, but just less interesting to me. Florida is beautiful, but you can only take so many sunrises, sunsets, and ocean themes. 3 more months, and I'm back in CLE-town.

@TedG954-do you stay in C-town for the whole summer? I do understand what you're saying about only shooting so much of the same thing. I think that grabs us all. I guess I just love the atmosphere of So. Florida. We'll probably be going to Myrtle Beach for a few days in February for my annual birthday trip. I get some nice shots down there if the weather cooperates. Love going to the beach. I'm glad your Sony system is working out so good for you and is what you wanted. I think you made a great decision.

I first started paying attention to Sony's cameras with the NEX line. One of the bloggers from Cruise Critics blogged his trips using the NEX and I was comparing his pictures to my Nikon. I couldn't believe how sharp his pictures looked, and then started thinking about the size difference. When Sony decided to come out with the A7, and it was full frame, I knew I had to have one. I am anticipating our trip to Germany (if we can afford it) and overall travelling, and after buying all the top of the line Nikon zoom glass, and seeing how heavy they were, I just realized I would have problems with all that gear, when travelling. I love the sharpness of Nikon glass, but Sony and Zeiss are right up there too. I hated selling all of my Nikon glass but something had to give. I later decided I stll wanted some Nikon, bu not FX. I went back and bought the D7100 again. I only use the 18-140, but it works beautifully for what I want it for. I may spring later for a Sigma 105 for macro, or a Tam-zooka. The only reason I am really inclined not to go the Tam-zooka route is this really isn't much of a birding area. I don't see many, and what I do see are usually so far out of reach and hidden in the branches in the summer that the TAM wouldn't do me much good.

I'll be going back to Cleveland for baseball season, so typically I'm there April through September.

The A7 is a terrific choice.

If you're taking photos to make money, it's one thing. If you're taking photos for the pure joy, it's an entirely different set. I'd much rather be associated with someone using an HP P&S and uses the hell out of it, than some self-proclaimed "pro" who has drained all the fun out of photography. It has been said so many times... it's not the equipment but the person operating it. I'm an equipment hog, but that's because I enjoy technology and all equipment in general.

You shoot what you enjoy. You shoot for the enjoyment it brings you. Out of a thousand "vacation quality" snapshots, you, or I, may find that one gem that keeps us going for the next thousand photos. Who cares what anyone thinks!

Some people are just stuck. They have invested $5000 (and more) in a certain brand name, and now they want something else. Two things are holding them back; the losses in money they'll take, and a wife that says, "I knew this was going to happen!" It's hard to critique your own decisions after they've been cast in stone. It's like admitting your were wrong. Again, who cares!

Enjoy that Sony and skip a lunch or two for that Germany trip! You have a good level head and I'm sure you make the right decisions.

Ted, you've just got to get closer to the small bathing suits you've been teasing us with... We're all waiting very patiently. :)

It's always fun to discover something "new" with your equipment.

When you bracket 3 HDR photos in the A7, it produces 2 photos, one non-HDR at optimal settings, and one HDR processed photo. That way you have a simple choice and a comparison. Cool.
