Are you on REALLY limited time coz you are going to miss so much by doing it in such a short time.

I should be able to have 5 weeks to do the whole trip, the section across I can do anytime. Getting to the tip is where I want to enjoy and take in as much as I can.

You should have plenty of time then. I did Brisbane to the top and back in 6 weeks with plenty of time although I see you also plan to go out to Cape Melville & Weipa which I didn't do but I went down the old cobb & co road from Laura and spent some time around Chillagoe on the way back. Do you plan to take the trip across to TI? I loved it over there :D

No plan to go to TI but I think I may as I am so close, now to get my new rig set up an ready :)

Well getting together a rough itinerary.

Day 1 Meet up in Cairns with some mates after driving from Darwin to Cairns via the Savannah Highway approx 2500kms
Day 2 Head through the Daintree to Mossman Gorge, Cape Kimberly Beach, Alexandra Lookout.
Day 3 or 4 Bloomfield track to Cooktown, Bloomfield falls, Black Mountain, Grassy hill lookout.
Day 5 Battle camp road, Isabella Falls, Split rock, Lakefield NP, Calpal crossing (Camp #1). Hann Water fall (Camp #2 if #1 not available.
Day 6 North Kennedy River, Low lake, PDR (200km), Archer River Road House (Camp)
Day 7 Portland Roads, Wenlock River, Batavia Goldfields, Pascoe River, Iron NP, Chili beach (Camp)
Day 8 Frenchmans Road, Pascoe River, (Bush Camping)
Day 9 Frenchmans Track, Weipa
Day 10 Wenlock River, Moreton Telgraph Station (Camp)
Day 11 OTT, Palm Creek, Bertie creek, Captain Billy landing (Camp)
Day 12 Explore headlands and fish
Day 13 Linesman Hut, Canal creek, Northern Bypass, Jardine river ferry
Day 14 WWII sites near Bamaga, Seisa (Camping)
Day 15 Free day
Day 16 To the tip
Day 17 Boat out to TI

As I said this is rough and I will make amendments as I go. But it is giving me a rough idea of time frames etc.

Hey mate - you are very much the "man on the ground". Cheaper and lighter sounds good. Weight can add up quickly.

Also need to consider strength and durability.
That las comment may have you worried about just how big I am but never fear. I am a strapping 5'8" weighing in at about 79 kilos. A snack for a crocodile. ;)

These are Interesting looking but what do you tie them off to? You are going to have to guarantee tie of points everywhere you camp.
The other swag/cot setup.....a friend used one on a trip on the Gunbarrel. She found it great.

Yes thats also what I thought about the hennessey hammock, I think the cot setup will be a much better idea.

It's what I've used (a basic swag that is) for many years of trips into the desert. Took a tent too, always, but only got it out in caravan parks or wet weather :D

Anyone with an ounce of common sense could see that would happen. He's lucky he didn't end up on his roof.

I didn't do gunshot. It's not really one to attempt if you are travelling alone, or at least it wasn't back in 94. Everything has changed and even the creek crossing changes regularly it seems, so you may do it via one of the less chancy entry/exits (I believe there are a few choices). I'm sure Scott is an excellent off roader, he does live in the wilds after all :D
