I hope these fit here. We took a trip to RAF Museum Cosford at the weekend... fantastic place to visit, but a photographers nightmare. No clear shots of any one plane. Still sifting through to see if I can get some reasonable shots from inside the halls, but this one is my favourite inside shot.

Next time I go, I think I will need a wide angle lens so I can get whole planes in a shot indoors :)

A couple from the outside display and I couldnt do much better... too much to see, too little room to get a clear shot :(

I'm not sure the in and outs of this site yet but, I'm looking for help with a Nikon D7000 (the best settings and lens). I'm taking pictures for fun at an air and car show on Sat the 11th. I'm not sure what I should do as far as the airplanes go, they are asking me to take a picture of each plane and its pilot as they fly in. I will be at least 18ft away from them as they come in and they will be moving a little fast. I want to do a good job, any ideas?

Did you try doing some panoramas? That might help get all of the planes.

Welcome.

Some one may be along shortly that might be able to answer your questions. You might add what lenses you have available. That may aid in the responses you receive.

Ok, a couple of questions first, What type of aircraft? Jets or propeller? Will you really be only 18ft from a landing aircraft? What lenses do you have available?
I use single point continuous auto focus and also shoot in burst mode, camera should then stay focused on the aircraft as you fire off a few shots. I use spot metering as the underside of an aircraft can be in shadow against a bright sky. I also shoot RAW so I can bring up the shadows in post if I need to.
I ask what type of aircraft as that will affect what shutter speed I am aiming for. Jets are fast moving and I normally aim for 1/800th to 1/1000 depending on the light available on the day. If you shoot a prop plane at those sorts of speeds you will end up with a completely frozen propellor which doesn't look right to me so I aim for around 1/250th to 1/320th.
I normally shoot in manual with the best aperture for the lens I'm using to get the sharpest result, shutter speed set up as above and leave ISO in auto.
Hope this helps.

Went to an airshow today, I haven't been in many many years. It was fun to hear the roar of the engines. Brought back a lot of old memories.

First of all, really nice shots!!! Where was the air show, and what lens did you use? I'm assuming you used a D600...

NAS in Jacksonville. I used my D7100 with a Tamron 150-600. The lens did a great job on this bright sunny day.

So did the camera and you! I may have to put that lens on my "Have-to-have" list, somewhere after the 300mm 2.8 and the 200mm 2.0.

I wondered if some event had occurred earlier this evening when an eight-ship-formation of T-38s flew over the house here east of Niceville. I was hoping to attend the Pensacola show the second weekend in November, but I've got a conflict. (So frequently it seems to work that way!)

Anyway, thanks for sharing the photos, and post more if you have them!

Nice shots PapaST. I've been seeing ads on TV for an air show in Stuart this weekend. Nothing like the one you saw, but they do show Gene Soucy in the ad.

A lot of aircraft around VA Beach. We are on the 14th floor of the hotel we are staying at. So I'm getting pretty decent shots.
