Filters filters...

Fellas,
Long time since I cleaned up the dust on my 40D and put to use. I am getting back to landscapes and need help from you to figure which filters are best

1) ND filters (3,6,10 stops) - Any color cast you see, what is the brand, size? (I probably will use wide angle lens like 17-55

2) Vari ND - Does it makes sense? If yes, which one is good (again color cast or the dreaded cross)

Usage is primarily for that silken smooth effect for water, clouds etc... I might use this during sun rise/sun set with a grad or reverse grad (I have singhray).

Thanks and your help is always appreciated.

Stay away from the Variable ND's, between the cross and poor performance, they are just not worth the money.

Hmmm. Rather a blanket statement that isn't universally correct, don't you think?

Yes, cheap VNDs tend to cross (and usually at a far lower level than they claim) and provide poor performance, but quality VNDs do exist. I wouldn't say a Singh-Ray is a poor performer.

After reading this thread I went and looked up the cross pattern effect. Very surprised to say the least as I just purchased one and had no idea about this problem. So I screwed on the filter and took some test shots. Could not get the pattern to show up. The filter I'm using is the Cokin Pure Harmonie 77mm.

It typically comes up a the max stop and beyond.

That is correct, tends to be a problem with less expensive ones. I have also read that some do not reach the stated "density", what is your experience with that concern?

My Singh-Ray is manufacturer-rated for 2 to 8 stops. I've gotten 10 stops out of it without crossing.
