Superb shot ! these are really nice pictures. When you’re composing your close-up bird shot, the background is extremely important for ensuring an effective photo. You usually want a dark or neutral background, so the subject pops out. Set the exposure metering mode to spot metering, so you can get a reading of just the subject while ignoring the background.

Good advice. I just wish that I had time to set up for it. I knew they wouldn't hang around long, and I was loosing sunlight fast. I got within 15 feet of them, and I used my 200mm with the aperture wide open. Aperture priority mode. I really had no time to fiddle with any other adjustments. The white background is my garden shed. The one on the clothesline is in front of some trees.

Been meaning to add this one and keep forgetting. Ignore the watermark, this will be used for other photo types for clients so I am just testing on this site to see if I like it or not.

Hey Mike. It is a shame they haven't crossed the pond so you could enjoy them as well. They are so fun to watch and are quite the challenge sometimes. I miss a lot of opportunities not having longer reach, but I love trying to get in as close as I can. It's even more fun to try to use an 18-55!!
