Hi

If you are already getting another lens for the telephoto work, then a good lens for general shots would be the Nikon AF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II ED DX. A longer general lens seems unnecessary as you would also be covering the longer range with your 70-300mm.

The girlfriend and I both shoot with the Nikon 18-140mm; her on a D5300 and I on a D7100. For an all-around, walkabout sort of lens, it's kind of a Jack of all Trades, Master at None sort of lens. It's not top end at anything, really, but it's does a lot really, really well.

The 18-55mm, with VR II specifically, is a gem of a lens, especially if you don't need much zoom or if size/weight are of concern.

The D5300 kit that I got came with two lenses; the 18-55mm and 55-300mm lenses.

The 55-300mm I'm okay with, but if I were doing it over again would probably lean towards the 70-300mm that you mentioned ... whether that be Tamron or Nikon.

The 18-55mm always left me feeling short on reach, although wide enough for landscapes. I'd be more tempted to do the 18-140mm if I was doing it all over again today. There's some overlap with the 70-300mm, but for me it would mean fewer lens changes when out walking.

I have been using a Fuji XS-1 bridge camera for the last few months, some great photos from it but it was terrible in low light conditions, the price of lenses you both have mentioned are well within my budget, on the 18-55mm lens what is the little round button on the lens for the other Nikon lens dont have this little round button?

It is to lock the lens to it's shortest length for transport.

Easy: buy the very affordable 35mm F1.8 af-s for DX. A great, sharp, light, fast focussing lens & the perfect equivalent to the old 50mm 'standard' lenses. For wide angle shots, just stitch a panorama, for medium distance portraits you have plenty pixels to crop.

You mentioned low light. If that is what you usually shoot, then a fast lens is required. As a general lens, get a zoom wide angle fast lens.
