I had to fly from Newark to Zurich back in 2001 and American Airlines came in at $350 cheaper ($150 beyond the discretionary difference on International travel), so I had to fly by way of Dallas. The shame of it was, I booked my tickets in late August for an early October trip and after 9/11 every carrier was at around $400 round trip. Going out wasn't too bad - I had a complete row on a brand new 757 to myself (the seats weren't worn out yet). On the way back there were more people and the seats had been "used". My ass was done before I saw land. To make things worse, I flew directly over NYC and could see Newark airport. Had it not been so close to the tragedy I would have asked for a parachute.
