I had this similar topic a few months ago. Today I went to a relatives benefit. I told her I would take some pictures while I was there. I figured nothing fancy. I had been there for about an hour shooting. I had my 610, SB700, 2 lenses- my old 70-300/4.5 and an older 35-70/3.3. I tried a few different settings due to the ceiling being about 15-18ft high. A woman asked me why I wasn't bouncing the flash. I told her since I was using the 300mm I would have to use full power. I was using the flash strait on with the diffuser and low power, which also prolonged my batteries. My camera was set at around 90 speed,f4.5 with ISO at 600-800 depending on what my distance was. She decides to tell me that if it were her she would use her 70-200/2.8 instead of flash. "It cost over $2000 and I also shoot with a full frame camera." " I also see your problem, you have a Nikon and I use a canon". Really!!

I wouldn't waste any time worrying about her. You could have mentioned some crap about how cheap the Canon's feel, but in the end, no one wins. She just needed an ego boost at your expense. She was really just trying to justify her choice for buying Canon, since all she saw in front of her was a Nikon. She had Nikon-envy! Let it go!

Actually I held back from laughing!! What was funny is she said she would set ISO as high as 3200. I decided to take a picture at that moment with ISO at 6400 and then show her! She didn't say much. LOL. I felt more comfortable using les ISO and a little flash.

if someone said that to me, you dont want to know what id say. I would let her have it.

but why were you shooting 300mm FL at 1/90 shutter? always try bounced flash first, unless you have no choice and that red light blinks telling you its under, and in that case id bump up iso over shooting flash straight on if I could.

I think I would have asked her why she didn't bring her rig with her.

Some people are downright weird when it comes to brands. Some months ago my wife and I were departing an event and upon walking back at our diesel VW, I noticed that another diesel auto had parked next to us. (Diesel cars are uncommon in the U.S.) When I said to my wife that it had the same motor as ours, the nearby female voice of its owner bragged, "But mine's an AUDI." I said nothing, but I caught the eye of her husband/boyfriend who looked completely ashamed by her remark.

I own both Canon and Nikon. I get some strange looks from people when they see me carrying both at the same time. If I saw someone shooting and I was going to approach them I would probably ask them what settings they were using in the situation they were shooting in. (Especially inside) To me, how someone takes a picture is more important than the brand of camera they are using. I like D7100 as much as I like my 70D.

I had flash set at its lowest and diffused. I forgot my extra batteries and set it low to last longer.

Since I wasn't worried too much about the pictures I was trying different things. All the pictures came out fine. They weren't works of art like I normally do! I'm sorry! I acted like a commoner! I let myself go! It won't happen again!LOL
