Using Nikon D300s shooting in RAW, with PP in LightRoom. However, when I view the RAW NEF in Nikon View NX2 the images appear sharper. Is there a reason?

One possible explanation is that Nikon software reads the in-camera settings and enables its own software to change the contrast, saturation, sharpness etc. based on those in-camera settings.

Correct, only Nikon software will apply the in-camera Picture Control settings, i.e. sharpness, contrast, saturation, brightness, etc.

You can of course apply all the settings you want in Lightroom. The big advantage is you can see the image first, to know what it needs, and what will help it.

Some people claim that Nikon's conversion software (View-Capture) is still the best to process Nef files. Unfortunately, they sold their "control point" technology to Google and now they can't use it anymore. That fact has left quite a few angry Nikon users that I know of. I tried to play a bit with the newer Capture-NX2 Beta version but can't quite get a hang of it when I compare with my ease of use with the Adobe products. So maybe the results would be better with the Nikon software, but to me, if I don't enjoy using it, then the fun is gone.
