All I can say is to ask yourself which lens will hold it's value longer?

You're probably correct, but the original poster (OP) stated that he's made his mind up and has chosen the f4. He's just wanting users of the f4 to justify and support his decision. I'm just wanting the OP to understand that the f4 isn't a bad choice.

Does it AF on my d5200 , I was aware it did not , besides still think the f/4 trumps it.

If I'm not looking to sell it, does it really matter?

I couldn't find the thread from a year or two back, but there's a famous photographer (don't think it was Joe McNally) that was selling his well worn 70-200mm f/2.8 on eBay. His reasons? (IIRC) He didn't want to lug around the sheer weight of the lens in his bag any more, and the IQ of the f/4 combined with the low light performance of modern Nikons made it no longer necessary to do so. So you guys can argue over all the potential "what if" stuff all you want - I'll go with the opinion of a guy whose made his living using them.

I've had mine for a year now and will be happy to recycle it in 10 years for what's new if that's what's required. I'm sure there'll be something by then that will have you all mocking the current f/2.8 in favor of it.

If it takes good pictures (whatever the lens), then it must be good! Jake is right....we'll be arguing when we're 70 years old about how heavy the 2.8 is. I must say it's a tank. I'm a big boy though so I think I can handle it for now.

I can handle the weight just fine for shooting. I shoot handheld with the Sigma 150-500mm, which is heavier. But I do a lot of hiking with my gear, and that's where extra weight in the bag or on the shoulder can literally be a pain - especially if I have the Sigma in there too.

I see your point, Jake....my camera bag is getting very heavy. Heck, I had to take the little dividers out just to accomodate my lenses. I am just going to have to realize that I can't take everything with me, all the time. I'm gonna have to pick and choose which lenses get to go on outtings and what to leave at home. My backpack weighs 21.7 lbs. now.

2 lenses in mine plus the camera and associated bits and bobs , want to keep kit to a minimum. last time went back home did 4 mile coastal walk with my shouder bag and tripod.
So this ime 2 lenses only and no tripod hencee the need for decent vr lens.

If you have heavy gear, I'd suggest looking into some type of hip pack (I use Tamrac). Think Tank also makes a waist belt, and you can buy all the modular pieces you wish to add to it. I bought Think Tank's padded waist belt and their Digital Holster 30 which holds my Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 mounted with my camera. Fourteen years ago I had a car accident that left me with some back issues plus I have small tears in my rotator cuffs. Shoulder bags tend to bother my shoulders and upper back, but with either Tamrac's hip pack or the Think Tank Belt, it isn't a problem to carry gear.

How much does your pack weigh? I have a great pack, it's just that my lenses are so big,, at least the FX ones. Then add in all of my memory cards (teehee), and I have a monster pack. By the way, I have a waist belt on my pack for added support.

Seen some on ebay but think they are fake , at half the normal price , think there's import duty too so not always a good deal.
