Frames

So... I happened to win a 20x30 print from a great photographer in the Colorado area (truly a beautiful shot) and am looking at getting it framed without killing the bank. Are there any online resources anyone has used and trusts, or should I just wait for the sale pricing to hit at the local Michael's or Hobby Lobby? Wanting to get an old barnwood look, or rustic white/blackwash feel.

I personally use a locally owned shop,, that has to keep prices withing reason,, or go out of business. Investing 120 dollars seems like a reasonable expense (my custom framing runs usually around that amount).

Call Michaels and ask if they're on at least 50% off mode, and what days... If they say they're not. Say "Thank you, I'll call again in 2 days and ask again." :)

That will be what I do in the long run, but figured it was worth asking. They rotate that 60% off tag regularly, and with that discount, I can get a decent frame/fitting for around $120. Off sale, it's $300, and I'm not quite ready to make that much of an expenditure!

That's pretty much my modus operandi... I generally keep enough back-log in stuff needing framing that I just save it until they're at 50% or better... The kid that runs the department at our local store sees me coming now... and waves me ahead...

300 dollars for a frame? ::what::I guess I never looked at frames before.

So... another question for you "framers". Anyone ever put a 20x30 print, matted of course, in a 24x36 frame? Does it look alright?

The reason I ask is the fact that I can find inexpensive (but quality) 24x36 frames seemingly EVERYWHERE. Not sure what the matte and glass would cost, but doesn't hurt to ask.

Here's a guide that I usually go with...

...from Frequently asked questions.. Artist Adrienne Wilis Jungmann - Studio

If you sign up for Michael's email list they'll send you a 20% off the entire order coupon. This is on top of sale prices. I took advantage of this when they were doing a BOGO earlier this year, getting each frame at 60% off.

What I hate about then is that most of their frames are imperfect somewhere - you just need to find the ding before you get it home.

Thanks, Jake! It's nice to know that these are considered standard frame/mat sizes, and ESPECIALLY NICE as getting a pre-made open frame set with mat and glass will be MUCH less than a custom frame. :D

FYI, Michael's coupons this week include a 40% off any one regular priced item, and 25% off the entire order including sale items. That's essentially 55% off the regular priced item, and you can do the rest of the math. If you didn't get the Sunday flier, go to michaels.com and you can view it there, and text the coupons to your phone. Pretty darn convenient. I need to go back for a frame I (thankfully) didn't get when I had the same thing but a 15% instead of 25%.

So another question now (as I wait for the BIG print to come back from framing)...

I'm framing up a couple of my own prints and was wondering... if you're wanting to frame something for display, and want it to look good for a long while, is there any particular type of print to use? Flat? Glossy? Metallic? So new to the print side of things still, so I don't wanna mess something up and have to redo it later!

For the record, I'm printing one B&W, one that's a mix of full color with B&W around the edge, and one BRIGHT full color bloom on a black background. All will be 5x5 under glass, so no foam boards or anything at this time.

EDIT: FYI - found the perfect 24x36 barnwood frame at Hobby Lobby marked down to $20.00, ordered a double mat (dark navy blue with a thin inner white lip) and used a daily use 40% off coupon on the glass, so gonna have a fine looking frame, mat and dry-mount fitting all for less than $120. WIN for the bald guy!
