Lens converters - Nikon or other brand?

Do you know if another brand than Nikon are good when looking at tele converters? At some point I would really like 2 of them - for the 105mm and for the 70-200mm - but they cost the same as some lenses when looking at the Nikon brand.

Just wondering if the quality are much lower in other brands?

I am using a kenko TC at present and works great.

I've got a Kenko 2X that seems to work fine, but I've heard of some lenses being finicky. I've not compared quality but have heard that if IQ across the frame is of major concern then you'll want the latest version Nikon TC's. It's what they say. For me, if I'm investing in something like 300mm f/2.8 then I'd consider myself a fool for not matching it with a Nikon TC since I'm already spending the money. But for now, for as often as I (don't) use a TC, I'm happy to know that I didn't pay for a Nikon while my Kanko sits - at least it's there when I need it.

The 1.4 works a bit better in lower light for one thing. The 2.0 I'm getting will require bright sunshine to auto focus. Even with the 1.4 there maybe an issue with auto focus. So, if you have no problem with manual focusing then this is a non-issue.
Also, the shutter speed isn't effected as much.

Okay thanks.. I was thinking if it would also start to be a little difficult to hand hold (with 2x) but think I'll start with the 1.4 - I can also change my camera to be DX.

Can't really vouch for the Nikon 1.4x TC, 1.7 and 2.0x TCIIIe since I've never owned them. I have the Kenko 1.4x TC that I purchased about 6 years ago. I rarely use it since I prefer the lenses being naked. I also have the Nikon 2.0x TCII (older version). It is ok but there is a substantial IQ degradation. The newer version appears to have better optics according to some of the owners here.

It might be worth the investment if you intend to use it with a f2.8 lens. Some uses it with their f4 lenses and are very contended with the results that they get.

I just won't be using it often, then I'll rather get other stuff, I think.. But for some dog sports it would be awesome to get closer!

I got my TC. I mounted it on my 55-300 Nikon to check how it fits and took it back off. The fit and finish is very nice. But, the last couple days the weather has been horrible. Rainy and overcast. I'll be taking some test shots as soon possible.
