I can still play quite a bit with the first one.

Also what do you mean by pressed? Poor angle?

Sorry - looks like 'pressed' isn't a word, lol.. I mean a little to compact/squeezed - which your second shot of the same view isn't!

Ah. When you said pressed I took it as from top to bottom! As in press down on something vs squeezed from the sides. Haha....It's all good. But yes it is the same picture without my version of being pressed! LOL!

Alright everyone. I went and did something stupid tonight at work. So long story short I agreed to take few photos for a friend/co workers sons' graduation. These won't be for anything major more of just a keepsake thing. (She was going to use her phone....and it isn't even an iPhone!!!)

Now my problem....in all my photos I have ever posted here on Nikonites, I think only one has been of a human. So as you can see I am way out of my comfort zone. Also I don't have the lenses nor gear (lightboxes/reflectors ect. I don't even have a flash mind you) for a major shoot. So what I am thinking is using the D90 with the 50 1.8D. And the D610 with the kit 24-85 3.5-4.5 G lens. The D610 with the wider angles is for the shots that are to incorporate his prop. A 2005 Ford Mustang. Yay...another thing I don't photograph. What have I gotten myself into?!

Any tips for a complete beguinner with no kit for portraits?

Whew....seriously my brain said no while my mouth said sure. What the hell have I done?!
By the way the person fully understands I DO NOT photograph people....and I am going up against a phone....so I figure my chances are at least 50/50 right?

This is going to be a learning experience. There really won't be that much pressure...I mean my competition is a smartphone....

But honestly I don't usually point my cameras at people. But I think it is something worth learning. And you never know, I may just enjoy it too. I know the 50 on the D90 will really shine. But I am going to test out what the D610 an shorter focal lengths will do for the car and person shots. I may need to get my brother to run some tests with me.

I hear you here. I normally point my camera at people who don't intend to have their photo taken (street photography), and an actual portrait shoot makes me nervous. The key thing that I do whenever I'm getting shots of people is stay relaxed. I try not to get nervous or anxious because it makes the subject feel awkward and nervous. You want them to be at ease and act natural. I also like to grab candids when I can, because sometimes those turn out really well.

To be honest, I'm terrible at posing people. The few times I've done portrait sessions I've been lucky enough to work with people who had a pretty good idea of what they wanted already.

Getting shots with cars is pretty easy. A Mustang will be a cakewalk, because is has very strong lines.

Awesome! You are gonna love it :)

Have some ideas ready for the shoot - where to place the guy different places on the car etc, so when you are shooting you can concentrate on the part you are doing, and not a lot of thoughts about fuk, what to do next.

Are the graduation indoors?

When posing, I let people stand as they prefer at first. Then I look at them and only make minor adjustments - I will rather move for the best spot with my camera than have them stand in a way they don't feel relaxed in. Just how I do it.

Natural is what I am shooting for. I am going to stay away from those normal rigid poses. He just wants something with the car.

The thing that is making me hesitant over it all is that I have no gear for doing intentional people shots. I don't even own a speed light because my on board has served very well in regards to my macro indoor stuff. I prefer the landscape/nature stuff.

I have actually stayed away from people shots because I don't want to enjoy it. LOL. Sounds odd, but it would mean more gear. And an add on to the doghouse I am currently in. ;)

You have 3 fine lenses for shooting people? I never use flash, if I can avoid it. So you got no excuses lol.
