Help...Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM worth buying?

When I researched before my last trip to WDW I found that almost all pictures were taken from 18mm to 40mm. After making my trip down there I found this to be very accurate. You will need a wide angle and faster lens for inside and after dark MUCH MORE than you will need anything long. You can check out my gallery of WDW pictures HERE. These were taken with my D7000 and a Sigma 17 to 50mm F2.8 lens. You might consider just renting a lens for ths trip instead of purchasing anything.

I might add that I now own a D600 full frame camera and will be taking one lens with me when I go back to WDW this Thanksgiving and it will be the equivalent lens for the D600 which will be the Tamron 24-70 F2.8.

On any pictures in my gallery that you want to know the EXF data just put your pointer towards the top right hand side of the bigger picture to the right and click on the little blue box with the "I" for info in it and you can see what each one was shot at.

Thanks Grandpaw!
Now you got me wanting the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8!

I think it is an excellent lens and know you will be very happy with it if you decide to get one!!!

I'm trying to find the best deal for this lens, but it seems that all the US based online stores are selling over my budget.
On eBay there several sellers that are selling it for under $400, but are from overseas in Japan/Taiwan/Hong Kong.
Is it worth buying an International version and forfeit the US warranty?
Is this lens reliable enough to do so?

You might check this out at Adorama for $349.95. It is rated a "D" which shows to be just under a new rating. I would call them and make sure it is for a Nikon mount.

I've looked at that before and it looks as if it is for a Sigma mount...not Nikon. :(

Thanks for trying.

If you are going by the picture it says that the this picture does not represent actual item. I would call to find out, its a toll free number.

I'm not judging by the picture but by the description...Used Sigma 17-50 2.8 Ex Dc Os Hsm F/sig Usa

The "sig" is for Sigma.

This is the link for the "NEW" version Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens for Sigma 583110
On there you will see a link that directs you to the "USED" version.

I wished it was a Nikon mount...so sad. :crushed:

...again I thank you!

Placed a bid on eBay for this one...Sigma EX DC OS HSM 17 50 mm F 2 8 OS HSM DC Lens for Nikon 0085126583552 | eBay
I sent the seller a request offer of $350 and asked about warranty...he responded back as follows:

Thank u for ur inquiry

I bought this from Japan, which means it's a grey market camera item. It's the Same exact lens here that sells for 569 in the USA retail stores, but meant for international market. Sorry no warranty. Works perfectly fine. I was in your same boat. Do I buy usa for 569 or go grey market for much cheaper. I went the cheaper route and have no regrets.
It's up to u whether u r still interested in the item. Let me know. I will consider. Thank u

Should I buy it based on being a grey market item without any warranty?

The plus about this sale is the included B+W filter which sells for $70
:)

Purchased the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 off eBay.
Like New...one month old for $320 plus 13.90 shipping.
Made an offer of $300, but was counter offered for $320...I accepted.

You should be very happy with that lens. Looking forward to seeing some pictures. I have very steady hands but I have handheld that lens at one full second and got a very sharp picture before.

Unfortunately, my hands aren't that steady...anymore, due to an accident.
I'm looking forward to receiving it tomorrow. I hope there isn't any issues.

Received the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 today...looks as if it brand spanking new.
The seller packed everything back as if it was never even opened except for the seals.

It actually surprised me on how well built it is.
For a sub $600 3rd party lens, it is made very nice...wouldn't even know it was that inexpensive.
I was expecting it to be similar in weight to the kit lens, but has good heft to it...more than the 18-105mm which is similar in size.
The only thing I find that I don't feel comfortable with is the direction of the zoom, which is opposite to the Nikon and similar to Canon...I'll just have to get used to it.

I took a couple of random shots to check out the focus...all are very sharp.

I think that the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 will be on my D7000 for 80-90% of the time now.
I'm considering on maybe replacing the 18-105mm, 35 f/1.8 & maybe 50 f/1.8D with this lens.

What do you think?
