Computer monitor

Not sure if this is the proper area to post this thread but I am in the market for a computer monitor so that I can start taking photo editing and printing more serious. I am really interested in the Dell Ultrasharp U2412HM monitor but I was wondering if there are any other monitors with similar specs that are recommended over the Dell? Is 1920x1200 really a noticeable difference compared to 1920x1080? Would the 1920x1080 resolution suffice for photo editing on a 24" screen? What about on a 27" screen? The Dell is so highly reviewed but I'm also open to suggestions. I'm just looking for an accurate monitor around the same price.

I have the Dell Ultrasharp U2413 and love it. Very crisp and more importantly is able to cover 99% of the AdobeRGB gambit and a full 120% of the sRGB gambit. I've had it for a little over a month and I really need to get it tuned up so as to get the most out of it. If you're patient you can pick one of these up at a discount price. I monitored the Dell sight because they often drop prices randomly by a good amount. I was able to get my U2413 for $375 through Dell. At this price I would highly recommend it over the HM model. I don't know whether I'd recommend it at its current price of $549, though

Thanks I'll have to do some more research into that monitor. I just read a comparison between that and the 2412m and it was more ideal to what I want to accomplish so if I can find it at the right price and nothing better comes up I might go with that.

How long ago did you purchase the Dell U2413 monitor? I've been reading reviews and a lot of people have problems with ghosting and light bleed from the LED backlight. Some of the reviewers say there were problems with the earlier versions of the monitor but Dell revised it a couple times and maybe that solved the issues. Have you had any problems or noticed anything?

I purchased this monitor about a month ago and I've had no problems whatsoever with it. I do know what you're referring to and I also read many of those reviews, too. I also read raving reviews about it, too, as well as seeing this monitor received many awards from different rating agencies. What I came to conclude is something I think is true for all high tech items. There will always be some % of products that have issues, this is seemingly unavoidable. And those who do receive a flawed product are far more vocal than those who are happy with their purchase. By the same measure, each and every Nikon camera has some level of noise on the internet claiming it's the worst camera ever made and you should avoid it at all costs. And from their perspective, I'm sure it's true. But in reality, I suspect in nearly all cases, this is a very vocal minority. In the case of the U2413, I doubt it would have received the kind of accolades it has garnered if it was indeed a poorly manufactured item. In addition, Dell offers a full 3 yr warranty on the monitor just in case you do receive a bad copy. Given this, I decided to roll the dice and so far am very pleased with my choice. The nice thing about the Dell warranty is that they'll pay the shipping costs to have your monitor fixed and/or replaced.

So to answer your question, I've seen none of the issues with this copy that I read in the many reviews on line. It could be in 6 or 8 months from now my opinion changes but I still have the option to return the unit at anytime over the next 3 yrs. In addition, because I bought the monitor with a Discover card, in theory it will double the manufacturers warranty (I've never filed a claim for such a thing but I'm told by Discover that it's possible). At any rate, it's good that you're doing your DD so that you can make an informed decision.

I can't find the 2412HM to see what the price or specs are for it, but how about one of the Asus monitors. I've been comparing the 2412M to the ASUS PA248Q for a while now and it seems pretty much a wash except for the PA248Q having USB3.0 ports and being better for some gaming. The 2412M is cheaper though. If the 2412HM is a little more expensive, then you might look at the ASUS PA249Q, PA249QJ (not sure what's different from the plain Q model), or PA246Q. All of these ASUS models are factory calibrated.

In that case, if I do end up ordering it it will for sure be direct from Dell so that I don't have any issues with returns etc. You wouldn't happen to have a macbook pro or know somebody who does that you can use to hook the monitor up to would you? I'm going to use it as an external monitor and I read people were having trouble with it on their Macbook.

If I'm not mistaken the U2412HM is the same as the U2412H. I'll give the Asus monitor a look. The dell that Dave_W recommends is great with colors so I'm looking for something to match that evenly. It says the Asus monitor covers 100% sRGB but I couldn't find the Adobe color specs for it, any idea what they are?

I think I read somewhere (newegg maybe) that the PA246Q covers 98% Adobe RGB and the other three models cover 99%. Not positive though, so maybe check it out elsewhere if that's important to you.

I can't find this monitor anywhere near that price right now and it's frustrating because I think I'm going to go with that one but I don't know how long it will be until Dell has another sale. Waiting sucks.
