Sigma F3.5 EX DG 8mm -- Compatible?

Hello Nikonites, I got a D7100 and was wanting a good (and specific) fisheye lens. According to Amazon, this lens is not compatible with D7100.

According to LensRentals.com here there is only a limitation that D7100 cannot produce the full circle.

So...what do Nikonites say? Hoping for input from someone with this particular lens but any advice is welcome.

Thanks!

It definitely works with the D7100. It's just like any other lens made for full sensors when used with a cropped sensor like the one in the D7100. The image is just cropped - the D7100 has cropped sensor so any lens whose focal lens is stated for full size sensors will have a limited narrower field of view. So a 50mm lens when used on D7100 (and any cropped sensor cameras) will have the field of view of a 75mm lens. This 8mm fish eye will need the field of view of 8mm to get the whole 360. When used in a cropped sensor camera, the field of view is reduced to that of 12mm lens - and a 12mm lens will not give you 360 deg view.

yauman, thanks! and here's a question that will definitely expose me as a newbie. is everything you stated true for the D5100? I have that camera also, just wondering if there'll be any significant differences should I use the lens with that body.

Yes, it will work with the D5100 as the lens has an internal autofocusing motor. The D7100 can be used with older autofocus lenses that do not have an internal auto focus motor - there's a screw drive that's in the body which engages with a mating shaft in the lens to do the autofocusing. So the D7100 can work with lenses with or without build-in autofocus motor whereas the D5100 can only work with lenses with built-in (internal) focus motors. This Sigma lens has an internal autofocus motor. That's the important spec you should look for when you are looking at lenses for the D5100.
