Suggestion for general lens

I just feel a flash would be most beneficial to me right now in a learning stand point. I could get just the sigma. Or I could get a sb700 and a second hand tamron which only ever so slightly falls behind the sigma.

If you're considering the SB-700 give some thought to the Yongnuo 565ex instead (and for a third of the price of the SB-700). Our resident "Flash Master" WayneF did a review of this flash unit not all that long ago. Definitely worth a read before you plunk down any real dinero.

I'm not ruling them out. I actually think he probably strays away from them from their focusing and QC issues about 10 years ago. It sounds like the sigma with the hsm motor won most the shoot outs between the tamron and nikon. The sigma is just a little out of my price range but may be worth the wait.

Still haven't pulled the trigger on a lens yet. However I came across a used (seller describes it in great condition in the ad) Nikon 18-70 3.5-4.5 attached to a D50 for $125. I know the D50 really isnt worth much but is that lens worth that amountish? I'm not sure what I would do with the D50 but its looks they go for $50 - $100 used so I could potentially be getting the lens for around $50. Is this lens any better than my current 18-55 that came with my D3100 Or is it even worth $50?

I doubt you would even notice the difference. The 18-55 is a good lens. Work with it and you will get good results. Save your money for a lens with more versatility like the 18-105 or more reach like the 55-200.

The D3100 is a good camera and the 18-55 will do a good job for you. I started with that camera and lens combination and got a lot out of it. Save your money and stick with what you have now. Work on post processing.

Also just bought a D7100. Man I need to update my signature! I still love my D3100, however I have been getting noise in it starting at 800 ISO enough to make me not want to go that high. 1600 ISO forget it I won't ever go that high on that camera. Shot a few frames on my D7100 at 2000 ISO and found hardly any noise! The D3100 is not even worth selling anymore either with the recent release of the D3300, so I plan on holding onto it as a back up possibly give to my little sister who is aspiring to get into photography.

That is not saying I have done any real ISO tests on my D7100 because I really have not had a chance to use it since I got it last week. That is just an observation from me playing with it taking a few around the house pictures of the dogs.

So I came across a used nikon 17-55 2.8 for $625 local however I'm still debating if it's really worth it to get that or just go with a new tamron 17-50 2.8 for $350. I know that's a really good price on the nikon but would I really see that much of a difference?

I doubt you'd see much difference but look over these test results and decide for yourself...

if you got the d7100 new from cameta call them and ask them to include the 18-140mm lens which they have on sale together. If they are any good they should sell you the lens for $100+ which is a savings of $500. If you bought the camera used or refurbed., ask them if they will give you a deal on the lens. Never hurts to ask.
