I found a piece of thicker packing foam in the skipbin at work, I think since I have been using it for my diffuser, the quality of my pics has improved.
Not as much light gets through the thicker foam ( 1/2" thick ) but it seems to be better.
I am back to using the onboard flash, because its so convenient and it works well, but I still want to rig up a better system for my Yongnuo one day.
I was thinking of reducing my flash power in manual instead of changing the foam diffuser, but since I have the new lens (microscopic) I require more precise light and some continuos light so this adds an extra detail into the mix.

Yes, any new gear needs a few tweaks to technique .

awesome , what lens and body , i have never macro shot but my next lens will probably be the sigma 105mm i just bought a d7100

Not sure, but if you are talking about my photos, I am now using a D7100 and Nikon 105VR macro lens.
I've got no reason to believe the Sigma wouldnt give about the same level of performance, in fact I have seen in at least one review where they said it was better than the Nikon.
