Hello Friends,
I own a D600 and my kit lens 24-85 got serious fungus issue, and i do not have any other lens. What i was thinking is sell my kit lens, to be frank with you I am not at all happy with the quality of the lens.

1. Instead of buying 24-120 which cost me around 1700$ I was planning to buy a Nikon 70-200 f/4 lens (Cost $1400). My main interest is People photography, Nature photography and Candid photography, sometimes wild life photography also. This focal length covers most of my interest.

2. The other cheaper option is to buy a 85 1.8G lens which cost me around $ 550 but i can only do a limited photography like portrait and people photography.

I am also on a budget - dont know what to do do buy 85 1.8G or 70-200 f/4.

Any suggestion in this matter is most welcome.
Regards
Deepak

They are both great lenses, I've owned both of them. If those were my only two choices, I'd take the 70-200 for the extra versatility.

Have a look at the Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC. It has great reviews, will save you a lot of money that you can spent on another lens. I'm very happy with it on my D600.

I think I would go for the 70-200mm. It gives you more to work with. And afterwards maybe save up for the 50mm 1.8, so you also have a prime lens to work with - 50mm is very good for night photography, portraits, candid shots and its not so big and heavy - or expensive :)

The set i have with my D600 is: (Ignoring my Macro lens)

Tamron SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC
Nikkor 50mm 1.8G
Nikkor 28mm 2.8D

You can get these three cheaper than one 70-200 Nikkor. :)

While the minimum focal length on the 70-200mm may be a little long for some candid shots, it definitely is the right lens for the rest of your interests. Haven't shot with the Tamron, but if you shoot wildlife that extra reach will only help on a DX body.

My confusion comes with your price on the 24-120mm f/4. That seems about 40% too high. I have both it and the 70-200mm f/4 and know I paid a bit more for the 70-200mm.

Before getting any more lenses, I would try to find out why your lense has fungus issues, otherwise you may land up with fungus on other lenses.

Fungus grown under these conditions
- Hot humid climate - especially valid in coastal South East Asia.
- Humidity in a cupboard, especially if the lense has a leather container.
- Full leather camera case with lense mounted.

Lens should be kept in a dry place, and if that is not possible keep a few Silica Gel sachets and change them (or recharge them if possible) periodically.

Regarding lense, why not try the 50mm 1.8d for general photography. It is small, cheap and fast enough for low light.

Everything he said also. Why limit yourself to those two choices??

Original Poster is in India.

That means the prices in countries other than the USA are not based on simply a currency exchange basis.

I knew that!! LOL For some reason I bypassed the "is" in your original statement and assumed the second word had to be price or related to it.
