"Demo" or Refurbished

I'm looking at a new lens which is available as a used "Demo" or refurbished. The prices are within $10 US of each other, so price isn't a driving factor. The used lens has a 30-day warranty and the refurbished has a 90-day warranty.

So my questions is, would you buy the refurbished or the used?

Thanks for your input.

Refurbished all the way! You know it was looked over. A demo model....eh...might have been dropped or banged around without a salesman noticing. And a 10$ difference isn't all that much for a better piece of mind.

I agree, and if nothing else, 60 more days of warranty to boot.

Definitely the refurbished item. Assuming it's a factory-refurbished item, it is, for all intents and purposes, nearly as good as brand new, and well worth it for the cost savings over genuine brand-new. You know it's been back to the factory, repaired,as necessary, and inspected to assure that it meets the same quality standards that a new item must meet.

You have no such assurance with the demo unit. I wouldn't rule out buying a demo unit, if the price was low enough, but it'd have to be a much bigger difference than $10 compared to a refurb. You're taking a much bigger chance with it. It's a unit that you know has been out on the floor, handled and played with by many different people; and there's no telling how roughly it may have been treated or what non-obvious damage it may have sustained.

In addition to what's already been mentioned, are the lenses both local? Can you take a few test shots with both and compare the images on your computer before purchasing?

Refurb. You can often get extended warranties on the refurb as well. And I believe my credit card, which extends all manufacturer warranties 1 year, would extend the refurb warranty since it's offered by the manufacturer, but not the 30-day used warranty that's likely offered by the shop.

Great idea, but unfortunately, neither is local. On the plus side though, both are with retailers that I have done business with earlier and trust.

Well, I ordered it! One Nikon USA refurbished Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 AF-S VRII is ordered from Adorama. I was planning on waiting for a lens sale, but it was $500 off of the price for a new one for the special offer refurbished one. I should get here by mid-week next week.

After I try it out, I may place my Dual Ring AF D 80-200 f2.8 up for sale.

Ok. I've got an e-mail with a tracking number indicating it has left it's originating point and should be here by Tuesday evening. I can't wait!

Oh yeah. I also paid $40 for an extended warranty for three years, but didn't go with the drops & spills. I hope I'm not sorry about that down the road.

If Drop&Spill add on is not exorbitant, then it is worth it, as you will be covered for all eventualities

Congrats and I think you made the right choice! Refurb would have had only one owner and cared for (more than likely). Demos get beat up.
