I'm an electrician by trade. And occasionally I do side jobs for pocket change. My wife calls it my "coffee money". Anyway, there's a guy I know that just had a 2 car garage built over the summer and he is offering me a trade to wire in his garage door openers, some outlets and lights. Along with a RV park plug on the side of the garage. He's supplying the parts. I'm just doing the labor. He wants to trade me his Nikon D5000 with battery, charger, and a light meter. He is keeping the glass. I don't need it. I don't charge a fortune to people I know. So I was going to charge him 350.00 for the labor. It's going to take me 1.5 days to do the work. I'm thinking this is a good deal to either keep as a second SLR. Or flip.

Given that he's keeping the glass I think you're getting a little less value than the cash you would have asked for, which usually isn't the way you want barter to work. With glass they're barely making $300 on eBay, so it will likely be easier to swallow and likely feel more like a "score" as a keeper than a flipper.

Kind of the way I was thinking as well. Maybe I'll see about getting at least one of the lenses with it. I have to see what the value is on the light meter is as well.

The question really is, do you actually need a back-up body and a light meter? Or are you thinking it would just be nice to have? Yes, Having two bodies is great, but some people have two and never really use both. $200-250 for the body, 50-75 for the meter.

$250-325 total. Or $350 cash. All you need is Drew Carey now.

Just be a good friend, do the job for free, and send me the camera equip. lol. I'd say it depends on how good a friend this person is.

Cash, unless he is a really good friend. If he can have a 2 car garage built it wouldn't bother me to ask for cash. He is saving a bundle by not paying the going rate already

He's a very good friend. Which is why I'm doing this for so cheap. He's done things for me as well. He does tile work and did one of my bathrooms cheap. I traded him a hunting rifle for the work he did for me!

Sounds like you should continue the barter tradition! A good tile guy is nice to have around :)

I look at it this way. It isn't whether either one of you is getting the better deal. Between friends all that matters is that both parties are happy with the outcome.
