Starting prime lenses...

So long story short; I'm using a Nikon D3200 with the kit lens 18-55mm VR for about 2 months, I'm still new to dslr photography but im learning fast, I got off auto mode from day 1 and I get pretty good results but I've noticed that f/3.5 kind of limits me at night shots without a tripod so I've searched for faster lenses. I came up with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8 which is on my budget but, I am worried about one thing; VR. Many people tell me that I'm going to have exactly the same results as my kit lenses because when VR is on I can use slower shutter speeds due to VR making up that little shake but these prime lenses are fast by themselves, my buddy gave me an exaple like: VR lenses on 35mm f/3.5 , you will get to 1/30 shutter speed with no blur but with the non-VR lenses at f/1.8 you will have to up your speed to about 1/60 for the same shot. You people know best here and I would appreciate any help from you, thanks in advance!

Get the fast lens and don't worry about VR, we lived without it for well over 100 years or so. My favorite lens is a 35mm 1.4, never even thought about needing VR on it.

Before you have proper technique it is a nice crutch. However, when you get good you will quit using it and only selectively turn it on.

Don't hesitate on the 35mm you don't need the VR. You will love the lens!

I've played back and forth with this idea. In the end the 35 wins. I get more good lower light shots with the 35 rather than depending on vr. Subject motion comes into play too, vr wont help with that, so I would rather have a slightly faster shutter speed with the wider aperture.

Welcome! Go with the prime! And maybe a monopod. VR while it does have a use. (IE. for me ....awkward photo positions) will never beat a good fast prime.

In the end VR just makes funny noises and eats batteries...

Comparing VR to wide apertures is Apples and Oranges. Sometimes in low light you want more DOF than 1.4 or 1.8 can give and VR helps you achieve it. To say it's just a noise maker and battery eater is ignorant.

i believe the OP stated something to the effect they wanted to get wider than f3.5. I also believe I did state it also does have its uses as you pointed out. Apples to Oranges were being compared so I did just that.

To the OP. Getting the 35 1.8 hand held without blur at 1/30 is doable. Just practice. Bracing yourself and proper breathing really come into play at slow shutter speeds. Also a gentle touch on the shutter release helps.
