I'm finding the ability for much quicker adjustments in your setting on the D90 extremely addicting, and the battery grips for the D90 are hands down better than what I've found for the D3100 and D5100!
I would recommend the D90 over the D3100 or the D5100 when it come to comfort and the ability of quick setting changes, to anyone getting into photography beyond just occasional usage in this price range. I'm finding it easier to figure out than expected, and I'm loving not having to go into the menu so often to make needed changes.
But I don't think the D90 will be as good for macro as the D5100, since the D5100 has higher MPs and the flip out LCD that seem well suited to taking macro shots. I haven't had a chance to compare them for macro yet, but it seems to me that the pros of the D90 aren't needed much for macro shot. Speed of changing settings isn't as important in macro photography as the higher MPs and the flip out LCD screen can be. I also believe that if your doing a lot of point and shooting letting the Nikon control the setting, that the D5100 will tend to take better photos. But since I don't use auto mode, that doesn't matter much to me.lol
To me the D90 is a more professional geared model than the D5100. That I think is the real important difference between them.
Here's another installment of my comparison for ya my friend!
