So guys,I tried to love the 105mm by Nikon but it fell short..The autofocus drove me nuts the way it hunts...What now?...My Nikon 85mm 1.8 is my favorite lens as well as my 50mm 1.8g...Not sure if I should put that $900 towards Nikons 24mm-70 2.8 or another prime...Anyone else disappointed in their 105mm?

Are you sure that your lens wasn't duff? I've just bought a mint 105mm f2.8 , second hand, and I haven't had any hunting . As a matter of fact, it locks focus quicker than my Sigma 150mm f2.8, which I thought was damned good at focusing.

Not sure.... Had big expectations but was finding my self manually focusing a lot...A lot of technology went into this lens but several people had same issues...Oh well...Looking ahead to my next purchase.

The 105 VR is great, but it is a macro lens. It focuses to 1:1 magnification. That is a long way to seek for normal focusing, but it has a switch on the side to limit its range, to keep it out of macro range.

I am of course speaking of viewfinder focusing, which is naturally much faster than LiveView focusing.

I have one too, and i wouldn't give it up for anything!
Like cowleystjames said, you could've gotten a bad piece (which is highly unlikely considering it's gold lens)..
maybe you could try another piece

I think Id rather have a 70mm-200mm..lol Really considering the tamron...Or a Nikon 24mm-70mm 2.8 for the standard range..

My next lens will probably be a 24-70. Sigma is rumored to be developing a 24-70 f2, I'm holding out for that. I have tested the new Tamron, it is nice, but 2.0 would be groundbreaking in the 24-70 arena. I believe the current Nikon is about 7 years old and in my opinion due to be refreshed.

I have the Nikon 105VR as well, I find mine to be pretty good with AF. Once or twice it has missed what I am aimed at, and focuses all the way in and then back out, but its never been a real problem.
I use mine in manual focus about 80% of the time anyway, because I mostly use it for insects.

I'm sorry to hear about your issue with the 105mm macro vr. I want one of those so bad I can taste it. Lol :)
I wish you much better luck on whatever your next lens choice may be! :D

Wow..Sigma must have heard what matt granger wished for..24mm-70mm 2.0 Where can I read up on that rumor?

If you plug it into a search, you should find a few rumor sites. looks like September next year. A long wait, but may be worth it. If it doesn't happen, I'll grab the new Tamron, The VC is awesome.

Macro lenses AF are typically slower to focus. Amongst the macro lenses that I have tried, the Nikon 105mm f2.8 VRI has the faster and quieter AF. Macro lenses do hunt every now and then especially if you are using multi-focus point. For the more serious macro photographers, they normally use a tripod and use manual focus to get the sharpest results possible.

I am definitely not disappointed with it as long as we know it's limitation just like with any other lenses and cameras.

For the $900 fund that you have, I think you might be happy with a Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 to match it with your DX camera.
