Was your d3100 maybe set for auto-iso? Were you shooting in manual on the d3100? It should not overexpose on those settings, rather you should be in a mode that helps you choose the proper settings. Don't just pick settings in manual mode.
If you can take a successful indoor flash picture on AUTO with your 18-55, your camera is probably fine. Also try a sunny day picture with your 18-55 lens on P mode. That should come out good on pretty much any iso also. Try auto iso like Horoscope suggested. maybe he can suggest the best minimum shutter speed for that lens to program in to the auto iso settings. Auto iso will boost your iso as needed for available light. But you must tell it how low to allow for a shutter speed so you don't get blurry pictures.
