Hi guys I'm on the market for a new on camera flash, my research has narrowed me down to the following three,

Yangnuo 560 iii
Nissin di866 ii
Nikon sb 700

I understand that the yangnuo is manual and the rest have ittl, but my questions to you guys are this

1) which flash would you recommend as a first flash ?
2) do you think I should start with a TTL flash or manual ?

I will be using the flash for walk around use in zoos etc and also using it for photographing my new baby

Hope this helps you with my question

I would suggest TTL dont know about the units mentioned but they should have a manual setting if you want to learn that aspect.

For your first flash, I suggest TTL. You can learn to use it in manual mode in addition to TTL. But starting out, you will appreciated the "auto" features of TTL. Plus, both will work with Nikon CLS.

As for Nikon vs Nissin, all my flashes are Nikon SB-800s, so I'm no help there.

Welcome :)

This would get more exposure in the Flashes forum: Flashes Forum

For on camera, certainly get a TTL compatible speedlight. I
f you can swing it, I'd get the SB-700 as your first flash (About $325 MSRP)

Appears the Nissin Di866 Mark II Flash For Nikon is about $290. I'd just spend the extra few $ and go with the SB-700. Maybe look for a clean second hand SB-700?

I have the Yongnuo YN565EX flash with TTL. It's a great starter flash and I havnt a problem with it. I haven't used an SB-700 so can't compare.

Regardless of brand, get one with ITTL. It's a great feature to have whether you use it or not, and you can always put it in manual mode.

Just got the 565 yesterday. Powerful little flash for around 100$. I have the 568 also, but really just adds a bit more power and HSS. That ones around 160. Both have TTL, which you'll prob use a lot to start out with when it's on top of the camera. I wanted 1 flash with HSS just in case I use it outside.

Plus the 568 can be used as a commander I'm pretty sure. Not sure if the 5100 has commander mode, so that might be something to consider.

If you can afford it, then get the SB-700, though the Nissin is a good alternative as far as I know.
I have a pair of SB-700s and they work extremely well with my D5100 :)

However, the D5100 has no commander mode (but the SB-700 can act as one)

Thanks for all the replys guys I really appreciate it, I didn't expect as much advice and help as this so thanks, my mind is made up and I will be purchasing a sb700 with the view of buying a couple yangnuos for off camera work :)

Would there be any benefit too buying a used 910 or 900 over a new 700 ???
