Nikon responded quickly, just a day after receiving my D5100 and quoted $175 to make the repair (they didn't specify the nature of the repair) and ship it back to me.

I agreed to the repair. The D5100 body only sells for ~ $500 and mine has certainly not been overworked or abused, so ought to have plenty of life remaining in it. I wish I could have put the repair money toward a new lens, but such is life. I don't know when I might expect it back, but I'm guessing that it will be soon. I sure miss having it!

Have y'all ever had one of those periods in life where everything breaks at once? In the last two weeks:

* My D5100 shutter failed (at Nikon service center)
* The dishwasher door spring broke. I fixed the spring, but the door was been dropped enough to bend a support bracket
* The garage door opener motor broke. After 22+ years and many DIY repairs, I'm finally going to install a new opener
* The microwave is making a funny knocking sound upon startup
* The bathroom shower pan is leaking

To be fair, our house is of that age where everything is reaching the end of its normal lifespan all at once. I'm fairly handy, but there's a limited number of hours in a day to fix stuff.

At these times I recall my mother's sound advice, when she says "If money can fix it, it's not so bad." It helps put things in perspective and promotes the more important blessings not borne of possessions.

Yes, I've had those kind of days, weeks, months. All you can do i take it one day at a time.

Began installing the new door opener today. The skilled artisans who installed the old one never studied the Pythagorean Theorem [ :) ] and everything is out of square. I can't stand that sort of thing, so am working to put everything in alignment before I hang the motor and rail. In another 1000 Hours, I'll have 'er done ......

My D5100 arrived back home yesterday from Nikon's shop after having the shutter mechanism replaced for $175. Total time from shipment to receipt was three weeks. I messed around with it for a few minutes last night and it seems well, but I'll take it outside today to be sure.

I'd never updated my firmware since I bought it new in October 2011. It shows A=1.01, B=1.01 and L=1.09, so I need to see if anything was done there. I've just never paid much attention to that, so I don't know what the newest versions are.
