Thanks so much for all the help. Really liked the paintshop but I have a Mac and they don't offer it yet for Mac yetbut still Searching. Thanks again.
Oh... Mac user, eh?

You may as well save yourself some time and keystrokes then and just get Photoshop, Photoshop Elements or Aperture. If you keep your Mac and you're serious about your photography, you're going to wind up with one of those three eventually anyway.

Have you tried Pixelator? It's $15 on the Mac App Store or from the Pixelator Web site. I bought it a few weeks ago and like it so far. I do have Photoshop Elements, plus Gimp. For most of what I need, Pixelator works very well. I will also use Corel's Aftershot Pro because I also have a laptop running Ubuntu Linux and it is available for both platforms. I only had to pay for Aftershot Pro once, but was able to download, install and use the single product key on both platforms. Not bad for $55. Aftershot Pro is basically Corel's answer to Lightroom and Aperture.

On my Mac, I normally upload from my camera using ViewNX2. I can do a lot of basic post processing with that, such a cropping, exposure, contrast control, etc. If I really need to tweak the image, I was using Photoshop Elements 9 but have now switched to Pixelator. It does what i need. I am not a big post processing person. It has to be a really special photo before I spend hours and hours in post processing. That's just me. Your mileage may vary on that. :)

Hope that helps. I realize you have gotten so many different suggestions. I didn't respond to your post until you said you were using a Mac. At times, the OS you are using will make a difference as to the products available. Whatever you choose, play around and select the product that does what you want and gives you the results you want. The bottom line is, just have fun!

If your a Mac user you definitely need to consider Aperture. It has worked well for me. I Photo is not sophisticated enough and photoshop is crazy complicated. I find Aperture very intuitive just like the IMac. I did not want o spend the money but I'm glad I did.

Like piperbarb suggested, get pixelmator software. I was going to go photoshop elements and decided to go this route.
I use aperture for storing the photos, but may switch to Lightroom 5 if apple doesn't update aperture soon.

... And would Corel paint work as a RAW photo editor?
Corel offers free, fully-functional, 30-day trial versions of their software on their website. I'm checking out PaintShop Pro X6 Ultimate right now and from what I can tell, it's a LOT like using Photoshop.

To answer your question, RAW files from my D7100 opened in "Camera RAW Lab", which looks strikingly familiar to Adobe Camera RAW, just fine and editing is, again, an awful like Adobe Camera RAW/Photoshop.

DL'ing the free trial version now to try on the office PC... I'm concerned the D7100 is not expressly supported according to their website.

Still, the free trial is worth a shot....

Please keep me posted on your progress. Being I'm new to using these types of apps and the tools they use, I'll look to you for some guidance. Additionally, although I'm aware there are some great HDR programs out there, I'm curious if this program has that capability but didn't see any HDR reference to that functionality in this program.

EDIT: Correction - it does mention HDR functionality.

I've been using Corel's Paintshop Pro for years, currently on X4, and plan on upgrading to X6 only because its 64-bit and includes FaceFilter3 (similar to PortraitPro). I gave up on Adobe products as it seemed they were in my pocket for something every time I turned around.

Is X6 coming out later because I see X5 on the site?

I do and I love it. It could stand to be updated but I presume that it will in time. It does everything I need an editor to do, but like everything else it takes practice and application.
