D5100 "soft" focus real issue or propaganda

Same issue as Lappers. I've already sent it back once for (recalibration). Came back with exact same issues. I have a D40x which I've I loved and did some amazing stuff with, but I can't for the life of me shoot good pictures with this thing. Always back-focussed. It may have something to do with my lens (same nikkor 18-200) but will test more on other lenses. I have a nikkor 55mm too but haven't had much luck there either. Will try the ruler test to see what I get.

Just did a quick test. For this, put my camera on a tripod and used my nikkor 1.8 af-s 50mm prime lens in Aperture priority mode with lowest aperture setting. Focus mode AF-S Single point.

Plain and simple, autofocus does not work on my camera (and this is after sending in for calibration).

First shot, lens set to Manual focus. I used viewfinder to place center dot and did manual focus on the 3 (15 inches).

Second shot, lens switched to A auto, pressed to focus and fired.

Was able to repeat this over and over. In every case, when using auto-focus, the viewfinder showed image in focus but the resulting image is out of focus...not just slightly out of focus, but significantly.

Have you tried it with other lenses? If so was the problem there with the other lenses?

Hi guys,

I have a Nikkor/Nikon AF 50mm 1.8D lens. It doesn't auto focus in my Nikon D5100 or D3100.

But it does auto-focus in my Nikon D300
AFAIK, this lens' auto-focus mechanism is inside the body of my D300.
Same with older Nikons like my D50/D200.

On the other hand, my D5100/D3100 do not have an auto-focus mechanism inside.
So it can't focus my AF 50mm 1.8D lens. If I use it on my D5100, I'll have to focus it manually.

The lenses that can auto-focus on my D5100/D3100 are lenses with the
"DX" markings

FYI

Thanks

I'd say that's some pretty hard evidence right there. I'd be having a conversation with the repair facility that did the repair. In all honesty, I'd also be prepared to dump that 5100 and move on. But that's me and I'm the first to admit I have notoriously little (or no) patience for issues like that.

How ironic, given the problems I had with the focusing on my D5100, that when I attended a friends party this evening, that he should ask that I advise his 21 year old daughter on how to use her camera because she had been having trouble getting it to focus. Turned out the camera was a D5100 with a 18-55mm Lens

Really curious... been several weeks since you reported this... then you have not been back aqs many have reponded until now, and again.. it is a 5100 with a focus issue.

In the past 3 weeks, maybe you can let us know what you have done regarding the problem... has the camera been seen by a tech.. did they find an issue.. has it been fixed..

Some details of what you have done about the issue would be helpful... I also have a 5100 that has no issue...

Thank you,

See all the D5100 regular members here have that are sharp as a tack I have to wonder if the issue is user error?

Having just received my D5100 from servicing by Nikon to replace my shutter mechanism, I tested the camera today in sunlight just to be all is well. After reading this thread, I thought I'd test the focus too and upon shooting four varied scenes with my 18-55mm lens using auto focus and manual focus using Live View, there's no discernible difference between the two. Both are sharp and well within my expectations. My camera was excellent in this regard prior to today's test; I just wanted to be sure that Nikon hadn't messed anything up. All seems well.
