I did it...now help!

Make sure that when you resize it that it is no larger than 1000ps on the long side. The one you loaded was 1024. I know it is a small difference but for some reason the EXIF data is lost when it is bigger than 1000ps on the long side.

That will be because the forum software is automatically resizing & resampling the image to bring it within the maximum settings permitted by the administrator. Because it resamples it (recompresses it) most likely based on the image being a JPG intended for web publishing it will almost certainly strip EXIF data to further reduce the file size without reducing IQ (you will note if you use Photoshop the default setting for "save for web" function is the same to remove EXIF data, or is in CS3 that I have at least).

I processed the first image...but barely.

I appreciate what you are saying about the light. My problem is that I shoot in this exact location in these lighting situations several times a week and with my D80 I get better images. This was a fast "session" with not a ton of thought put behind it (I'm really just trying to practice with this new camera)...but I am confident that in the same situation with my D80 I would've gotten better results.

So...all things the same but the camera body I feel like i am missing some nuance of the D7100. Maybe I'm wrong.

As I am sure you know, both cameras a very different. D80 has a CCD sensor and the D7100 has a CMOS. The processors are also very different and the ISO range and dynamic range will be different. In other words, they are different. You will get different results, even if you have both cameras set up the same. Further, your favourite lens will perform slightly differently on each body. Trust me, there is nothing wrong with your camera. I suggest you take a deep dive into the settings, especially the picture control. Good luck

This is a good explaination. Also the improved resolution of the 7100 will REALLY magnify any poor shooting technique you have. I upgraded to this camera from a D90. And the 7100 exposed any short comings of my lenses, and technique.

For the outdoor shots. While you were getting good results with the D80. I would have bounced a speedlight off a reflector for that situation.

First a couple questions:

What metering mode are you using (Matrix, Center Weighted, Spot)?
What Auto Focus settings are you using (assuming you're using AF of course)?

Here's what I suggest:

1. Reset your camera back to the defaults since you say you've, "done a lot fiddling with the settings" and, as has already been posted a few times, go into your camera settings and bump the Sharpness setting to +7. Adjust no other setting than this so we know where you're operating from.

2. If your lens has VR, and it's been enabled, turn it off.

3. Take some shots in full "A"uto and post them up so we can determine if this is "camera error" or "pilot error".
