Nikkor 500 mm & NAS

I walked into a camera shop today, just to see what they had, and had a great conversation with the sales clerk. I found a new strap that I'd been looking into purchasing, as well as a compact flash card holder. I also looked at the Nikkor 70-200 VR II they had in stock, but they didn't have any wides like I was really looking for.

Then, the clerk showed me a "Little something they just got in" : A Nikkor 500mm f/4!!

Oh, my!!! I can't afford this lens right now, but I can't stop thinking about it. It would have been great at the lake shooting water skiers today.

I've got NAS... B-A-D! I may have to sell my house to buy lenses. ;)

Are you referring to the 500mm f/4 P AIS Nikkor? It is a superb lens and has contacts which allows it to communicate information to the camera. It is however, a manual (OH THE HORROR!!!) focus lens.

I'm not sure what version it is. I just plan on staying away from there and from ebay. I can't afford one right now, and I can't resist them if I'm looking at one. I hope I don't dream about them tonight.

Against my better judgement, I called the store and asked. It is an 500 mm ED AF-i D lens.

Without seeing it in person, I feel no increase in NAS at this time. ;)

I live in a rural area with the largest city 25 miles away, population 75,000. There is one pure camera store (prices so high I don't know how he stays in business) and a Best Buy that's somewhat competitive with a sparse selection so virtually all my photo gear/supplies comes from the Internet, mostly eBay.

I feel fortunate about not being within easy driving distance of an Adorama, B&H or such. The temptation of holding equipment in my hands and hearing "shall I ring it up for you?" knowing its the best possible price would be a massive test of willpower.
