I have windows xp still...is this why I am having these issues?

I don't think that is the problem, why don't you uninstall that Nero program and see if it fixes it. I would look into getting a more up to date OS, however. Windows 7 will let you do everything that Nero program does.

I just checked, my NEF's are not associated with anything. I click them and windows wants to install something which I never do. I prefer nothing opens if I click one. I'm fine with opening Lightroom or VeiwNX and going from there. Anyway, the pictures should be seen in VeiwNX regardless of association. Either they were altered in name on import or never really imported. What version VeiwNX are you running? 2.7.5 should work on D7100 files, but 2.7.6 is available. Can you use Windows Explorer to verify you have copied picture files to your computer? Verify the location. Open VeiwNX, verify the version is 2.7.5 or newer. Then direct VeiwNX to the location that you verified the pictures are in and you should see the pictures.
Another thing to try, leave pictures on the card, have VeiwNX look at the card in the proper subfolder. You should see pictures. No import needed.

It's also possible Nero changed the file extensions to .nrg or something else. Did you try to burn the NEF files to cd or dvd? If so, you may have to convert them back before NX2 will recognize them.

When software updates there's sometimes a little box that says something akin to "use xyz program as default for these files". Audio and video programs like to take charge and knock the predessors out. If you don't uncheck the box, the latest update is now the default program even though you might not like it.

Well, it has been a while since she last posted... with some of the instructions I would hope that she has fixed it...

If not, please send one of the files to me at pmcghie AT gmail DOT com and I will take a look and see if I can get it fixed...

Let me know...

Hi Pat, sorry I was out grocery shopping! :) Gotta feed the family... ;)
Anyhow, I haven't sorted it out yet....I think I will have to wait until I switch computers, (tomorrow evening) this one is on the edge as it is. My mother in law is giving me hers...she doesn't have much on it, I will start from scratch...then I will put a new LR on it and see if that helps. If it doesn't, I will send you a file.
Thank you so much for all your help...

I use Irfanview as my default picture viewer. If I have to process anything further, I just jump over to LR or Capture NX2. All my picture files are file associated with Irfanview. It's just a great little program....and it's free!

Jack is so right on this! Cannot beat the price and it does so much!! I use it for its batch mode to process 30 or 40 files into a thumbnail page for web site uploading... Works slick for that, simple resizing etc...

Coming in late to the conversation, but can't rule out XP as part of the problem. Sounds like she's going to use another computer so it may be moot.

@ DuckyChickenLady:
As to the older version of the software, it's common for OEM's to send their included CD' for printing, which include documentation, driver files, support software, etc., long before an item is released for retail. Typically one or more companies produce different elements of a single product in Asia, so it's not uncommon for the entire cycle to be 3 months before the items hit the shelf (including the boat ride :) ).

I had this same problem with ViewNX2. It was very frustrating. By accident I right clicked on the desktop icon, went into properties, then clicked on the compatability tab. There is a drop down box that asks you to select the windows version you are using. Once I did that, I've had no more problems. However it was extremely frustrating that this wasn't addressed by the set up wizard. The only other time this has not worked for friends is when they were running Windows Vista, in which case they had to download the older version of ViewNX. Hope this helps.
