Pat,

How do you make your workshop and products look so photogenic?

Your photos are great. Just wish I could do the same in my workshop.

Thanks for the kind words... The workshop just looks that good... I have been in design and mfg for over 40 years and this is the cleanest plant I have ever been in. We do produce products for the Medical industry so cleanliness is important. Our customers compliment us on the appearance of our facility and it has helped to get new work. We have a clean room, but our main plant could be certified as a Clean Room based on the actual air quality. (we don't but each renewal we have them test the main plant)

The product shots are shot on a counter in my QC Lab. There is fluorescent fixture under a shelf and I put up a backing piece of paper on the counter and curving up wall (white or black) and photo them on the paper, under the light.

That's all my secrets!! :) Try a few, sometimes the composition can make it appear better than it is...

I'll have to give that a go Pat.
I run a Design & Manufacture group within a large organisation making scale models and we often take pics of model components but they are quick grabs often just to confirm the correct parts are being used and its rare that we take any nice shots. I've often wondered how photogenic the parts could be but have never tried. I might well give it a go having seen your work. Only bummer is that I wont be able to post them on here as they are a bit sensitive!

Your shots today are all great. Like them a lot. Now I can see in the pics that you enjoy taking photos with your heart, not camera.

Great! Give it a go... You will know even if you cannot share... I know which of mine are good, composition of parts if multiples, angle of the shot etc.. Best wishes, be a good project for you!

Is it your job, this photographing parts? I wondered that a few times now :)

Mai, very good question..... The short answer is NO but there is a 'but" attached.

1. When I got started back into photography, I started taking some shots because they were readily available along with factory shots. When I set up my Zenfolio Website.. I had just done a Work Holiday Party and posted the pics in a Client section. I put a private directory and sent the link to our CEO, CFO, Marketing Director, GM and my boss. I asked for permission to use the photos to build a portfolio etc. We had just had brochure and web photos taken by a pro studio. They stated that mine were better than what they just paid big bucks for, agreed to let me use the photos (I do have to protect some proprietary products) and in exchange, they could come to me if they needed photo's. I of course agreed. I have done several jobs for them, usually specific detailed (macro0 shots) on tooling issues to share with customers.

2. I have now made a portfolio of product work, started putting out feelers to friends in NH & MA that I am available to do small product type photos. I have not yet received any pay work but it also is not something people need every day.

Since I have a full time job, I would like to do it as a part time endeavor... (until I retire next year!!!)

Mai, thanks for the interest and asking the question... I hope this answers it fully. Please note that credit for my ability is a direct result of what I have learned from Nikonites and its helpful members!!! (Plus lots of practice..

Have fun Shooting!

If you go back to Post #509 in this thread, someone else had asked about the product setup.. there is a pic of that (pretty simple really!!)

Good way to approach it - you got to do pictures, you learned, you got a portfolio. Hope you'll get more paid jobs, just enough so its still fun to do.

You are such a nice guy, always giving Nikonites your best words, just remember yourself and your creativity. But hey, I am a VERY big fan of Nikonites too, very cool and helpful people writing here.
