Yes I do think these are better. Remember that just because you have access to a very wide F stop doesn't mean you have to use it. With you being that close up, you might want to try something closer to F4 or F5.6 and see how that works. Remember that the bigger the F stop opening the less DOF you will have and also the closer you are the less DOF you will have also so when you do them together the DOF is very narrow.

This set of 4 were all taken at ISO 200, F8...
50mm f 1/8 and the 18-105 @ 50mm
35mm f 1.8 and the 18-105 @ 35mm
To my eye anyway, these 4 seem fine and that is 3 of my lens taking the same flower..
Guessing that equipment is fine, softness prior was Operator Error!!
