I never use Auto ISO..taboo IMO...(wouldn't say I wouldn't though if I had a high ISO capable rig)

Auto White Balance yes...Auto ISO...no

Chalk it up to M and film I guess... :)

I believe there is a time and place for almost every control on my camera. I shoot in almost every mode except Auto. Program gets a fair amount of use followed closely by Shutter. Auto ISO when I need a certain minimum shutter speed but am shooting fast with changing light. Then normally with it set on 200 ISO with a max of maybe 600 ISO. Then I am paying attention to what the camera is shooting with.

agree. i don't know if i could force myself to trust it even if.. I'm just too used to being in total control!

Auto ISO is about control. It's about controlling shutter speed and aperture in changing light situations and not needing to keep adjusting the ISO. Since you can set a maximum ISO you even control that. It's a great feature and I used it Friday night with great results. I set the max on my D7000 to 400 and set my camera on manual with the aperture and shutter speed I wanted/needed and let the camera adjust the ISO from 100-400 so I could keep shooting. As I said, there's little difference in noise from 100-400. I'd use 800 or 1000 it meant getting the image. Noise can be dealt with in post, missing the shot cannot.

I use auto ISO with my D4 & D800 I like the fact it adjusts for the FL automatically. Most of my wildlife shots are taken very early in the morning where light is a premium & constantly changing, having the camera look after the ISO is a bonus :) After all isn't that one of the advantage of digital?

The Auto ISO on the D800 is brilliant. I wasn't aware the D4 had it too. As you say, it can automatically set the minimum shutter speed to the focal length of the lens...even zooms.

Do you do the same with your D7k?

Not exactly the D7000 does not have the ability to adjust the SS for the FL. If you set the max ISO to 800 lets say that's where it will stay regardless of FL. If I am using the 300f4 with a 1.4TC I set it to 3200 iso because I need the SS to be around 1/1000.

I am definitely in the vast minority here, but for me, my D700 is little more to me than a digital F2S. I don't know what two thirds of the buttons and about 75% of the menu items do and honestly, I don't give a flip because I don't have any autofocus lenses and I essentially never use any kind of automation. My D700 stays in manual 99.9% of the time and I use the camera's meter less than 10% of the time. About the same amount I use(d) the F2's meter. If automation works for you that's great, whatever helps you take better photos, but it is not for me. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks.

I am with you Scott I think of my DSLR as a FM or FE...

I also really believe that if I used AF lenses it would make me way better than I am...but I also would get way bored with picture taking I think.

I bet your D700 shoots way faster film than your F2...lol

I'm sure it does, if I had ever used it. In the three years I have used it, I don't think I have ever used the ISO on the D700 faster than 800. In fact, 99% of the time it stays on LO-2 (100). I used to push TX to ASA 1200 all the time when I was shooting sports events at night using Acufine developer and hydrogen peroxide.

I bet you rarely shoot a shutter speed faster than 1000 with it too...just an educated guess...am I right? :)

Actually no. I like having a two stops faster shutter speed on the D700 then the F2 sometimes. It lets me use a wider aperture without the need to use ND filters. But when shooting model swimsuit stuff at the beach, I have to sometimes use an 8x ND on the D700 or F2 because my RF slaves will not synch above 1/200 sec. Since my favorite outdoor portrait lens is my 180mm f/2.8 and I like working at f/4 most of the time, it is a necessity to use ND filters, even at ISO 100 on the D700. I would love it if the D700 went to 25 ISO. Alas I really miss Panatomic-X or Kodachrome 25 sometimes!!!
