Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I have one of these coming up in June here in Topeka and the company I work for are huge sponsors/participants in the run and I was offered the oppurtunity to photography. Now with seeing that I will have to politely have to turn it down and just go as a spectator. THANKS for posting this because I figured if I just stayed a little ways back and be okay. Well thanks I can't say that enough!!!

I am sure that if there was one in my area I would have jumped at the chance to shoot it. Not now though.

I ran one of these last year but kept my camera far, far, away. And I'm glad I did. It was a mess. I didn't want to run it because I thought it sounded like a dumb concept but I did it to support a friend who wanted to do it. It turns out I was right; I thought it was ridiculous and won't do it again.

Just put your back up rig in a giant Ziploc Freezer bag and make sure the double Ziploc seam is purple! This is called the plastic freezer bag filter... LOL

Don,

Thanks, that was interesting. As a former distance runner, why would I want to run through colored dust/powder? I bet it's not great for one's respiratory system, either.

It is being done all the time so you know it has to be pretty safe.

USA Color Supply - Your source for quality colored powder

There are not as many hard core runners anymore. well not enough to raise money for all the events. I think that was the reason to ratchet it up a notch with the color. Kids love it.

I was asked by the promoters to do the shoot, pays $30 per hr, they provide plastic sleeves and blower to clean your equip. After reading these articles I backed out, besides the fundraising is a scam, promoters take in 350k and donate less than 10% to charity, plus they sell all your pics.

I thought it was going to be an article about when you do your laundry and your colours run!!

I will have to give second thoughts now to ever taking pictures at an event like this in the future :)

One of the local Churches here had one of these recently as a fund raiser. I was working but if I had not been working I thought it would have been a great photo op. I would have been shooting it. Next time there is one in town I will be sharing this with the promoters and Facebook and hope it might save a camera or two. I think the only camera I would consider using would be a true underwater camera. That would probably survive.

Wow - did anyone see this pic from the original article?

A Sigma 8-16mm with the barrels removed so you can see how pervasive the Fun Run dust was throughout the entire lens. The dust around the mount side of the lens is so thick that it’s blocking the AF motor from working properly and it’s so caked into the lubricant that the helicoids don’t zoom normally. This will have to be completely disassembled and cleaned piece by piece.

I don't see the point of the colored dust?

My wife runs in these and I still don't get it. After the last race, the light beige interior of her nice car was lightly colorized in a number of areas by all of the fine dust. Being a gearhead, this upset me. After a lot of cleaning, she finally got it all out. You guessed it -- she's signed up for another race this fall. Here we go again.

Have her leave the car at home and RUN to the run.
