I've seen there's a lot of light meter apps for our smartphones out there. They are not expensive but are they worth the price?

I don't think this is a yes-or-no question. Light meters can measure not only reflective light but incidental light as well, which is one of their biggest assets. They're very consistent and very accurate so if you want spot-on exposure right from the get-go a hand held meter is the way to go. Using a meter will also (probably) cut down your post-processing time, so if you hate sitting behind a computer doing post' a light meter may be a good investment for you. I don't use a hand held meter because my exposure is always perfect right out of the camera.
