You need to be more specific. Software to do what?

There's lots - what specifically do you want to do with it? Are you looking for something simple or do you want to dive into the deep end?

Super Mod
iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, Phososhop CS6… These are only photo editing software. There is quite a lot of software available for Mac for other uses.

There is no right answer, but lightroom and aperture are probably among the easiest to learn as they use sliders to make adjustments to the images (easy to experiment with) whereas Photoshop is a bit more complex but ultimately is more powerful.

Photo editing is a vague term. Some people only slightly adjust contrast and sharpness and call that editing. Others composite multiple images and take the best parts from each frame. Whilst on the extreme end some will take it so far as to edit a photograph so that it looks like a digital render.

What is it you wish to accomplish with your editing? What do you shoot mostly?

Why not start with ViewNX2 that came with your camera. You can download the latest version from Nikon's Web site. It's easy to use and is able to do all the things you want. It's a good place to start before you jump into another program with more features. I use it a lot on my Mac.

I will make it simple. IMO if you can handle iPhoto , I would move next to Lightroom or Aperture. Both are powerful and pretty easy to use. They give you some needed ability even if you later move to adding a Photoshop type app. The ability to create libraries that span multiple volumes.
