18-55 Replacement

I have decided to go ahead and order the Refurb 18-105 from Adorama. I have the extra year warranty (VIP) and have free shipping.
Congrats on the purchase-to-be, I think you'll be very happy with 18-105mm... While I wouldn't call it spectacular glass it's just so damn versatile my 18-105mm rarely comes off my D5100 any more. I still have my 55-200 but not for much longer I don't think since a 70-300 might be in my future. Or 85mm 1.8 prime... Or...

Pat, I just got my 18-105 today. I think you will be very pleased with yours. My thinking was like yours, that it would be an everyday replacement for my 18-55. In my case I also have an 18-70 (no VR) in the mix.

I only had time to take a few shots, but it's certainly sharp enough for my everyday needs with significant reach over the 18-55. It has a little more reach than my 18-70 and having the VR is great. I was able to take some hand held available light shots that would not have been possible with the 18-70 on the same settings and it looks like I did not lose anything over the 18-55, I just gained more reach. I probably will not make myself crazy comparing them. I'm just planning to have fun with it.

So based on 15 minutes of play time, I am very happy and looking forward to getting out to shoot. I never bought a refurb lens before. It is in absolutely new condition. No signs of use anywhere, including the plastic mount. I totally forgot about the Adorama extra warranty and I got it from B&H, so only 90 day warranty. I don't think it will be an issue.

Enjoy your new lens!

Thanks for the update and great that you are enjoying so far!! I am looking forward to saturday when mine gets here. I have bought 2 other refurbs (factory) and like yours, they look brand new!! I do not think the warranty difference will be an issue but I have the Adoram VIP and an extra year is included on all purchases so when they have an item at the same price, I tend to shop there.

I have a 35mm and a 50mm f/1.8 primes for those "special" shots!

Ok, my 18-105 lens arrived today! I like it so far, though I have not done anything creative yet...

This series is just checking the zoom etc.... No post processing at all...

18mm.....................................................................35mm

It appears I will have what I was looking for, an expanded reach dailey walkaround lens..
I know there are lots of options and many are compromises 9some more/some less) but I believe
that for my uses, this was a good choice.

Have a great day...

Good to hear you are happy with the new lens Pat.

Can you notice any improvement in IQ over your 18-55 ?

Thanks Brad...

Honestly, have not used it enough to say there is better IQ... In reviews etc that I tracked, it was not supposed to be better, in fact maybe a little softer in the edges. I was hoping that it would at least as qood of IQ and bought it for range as a dailey walk-around lens. To date, I say IQ is as good, softness is not noticable.. and the range is extended. I am pleased!

Thanks for the feedback Pat.
I am holding out for a 16-85, but if I cant wait that long, I may end up with one of these as well.

I have got my D3100 and 4 lenses up for sale to help fund a D7100 and 16-85. Had a guy come and check out the camera and both kit lenses yesterday, but he thought I would pretty much give them away, so I still have them.
If I have no more takers by the weekend, they will go on Ebay.

I did not notice, do you have it advertised here?

Any reason no one has mentioned the 18-300? I have read some very favorable reviews, there's significant fish eye at 18mm, but can be corrected in LR with lens corrections.... Still quite pricey though.... I think I will be ordering a 18-105 as your thread has convinced me.... Even though it overlaps my 70-300 by 35mm, it could in some instances mean I wouldn't have to change lens to get that little bit more reach....

Samsonite that 18-300 is one heavy chunk of lens. My thought is with such a huge focal range output would be comprimised. Nothing wrong with overlapping a bit in focal length You'll enjoy the 18-105, it's a bargin priced lens that delivers. .
