I have the Nikon 70-200 2.8 vr I do like it , but its heavy ..... I have the 55-200 vr afs kit lens , its light weight and I like that I am thinking of the new 70-200 f4 . I also want to take a look at the tamron and sigma I want to feel the weight of all these lenses . I need a high quality light weight option any suggestions ?

The reviews on the 70-200mm F4 say it is very good....I have 2 F4 lens the 16-35mm AF-S & 300mm AF IF ED both work extremely good on the D300...

I own the Sigma 70-200/2.8 OS. Picked it up new for $700. It's a great lens. Fast AF, sharp as a tack and the OS works very well. For me, it's a keeper. I have no aspirations to buy the Nikon version as I am super happy with the Sigma's results. Unless your flush with cash or a pro who can justify the expense, I say look at 3rd party lenses. Some models are not far off Nikon versions and some are even better.

I know the EU pricing for the Tamron is rather absurd. In the US, there is a $900 difference between the VRII and the Tamron, which is pretty sizeable.

Too bad import taxes makes it near impossible to grab one at us prices

All the 70-200 f2.8 models will have about the same weight. The only real difference you would notice is if you get the f4, which is really light IMO. Assuming you don't need the f2.8, the f4 is a really good lens. Small & light enough for me that I don't mind throwing into a backpack & the few daylight/daytime shots I've taken with it have all been exceptionally crisp.

How and where did you get that for $700.00 ?? that's a great price ... I want to get the highest quality ,lightest weight 70-200 I'm still undecided , but for $700.00 I don't think I could resist

There is a new Tamron 70-200 F2.8 with VC. It has been out for the Canon since December but I am still waiting for the Nikon mount. The reviews for the canon mount have been phenomenal. The VC is supposed to provide at least 3 to 4 stops of vibration compensation. I read a review that said it worked hand held at around 1/15. It lists for 1499 so it is 600-700 less than the Nikon and it is a bit shorter and significantly lighter. I am just waiting for my local store to get it in so I can feel it on my D800.

I've been checking for new reviews on a daily basis since the lens was first announced last year. I have yet to run across one that wasn't extremely positive. According to Tamron, the lens has started to ship to merchants. I have a number of auto-notifications to let me know when someone has this in stock, so I'm ready for it.

It does. I had decided to pick up the Nikon 70-200 f/4 until I saw the reviews for this Tamron, now I'm reconsidering.

I'm thinking the same way now too. I really like the f4 but the subject seperation will be better at 2.8 and don't want the Nikon price. It's been out for a while with the canon mount so I've been reading some early site and user reviews.

I wanted the Nikon f/4 because the reviews have been nothing but positive and it only weighs 30 oz. (850 grams) which makes it a perfect travel lens. The Tamron, while lighter than the Nikon 2.8, still weighs over 3 pounds. Another vote in favor of the Tamron is the inclusion of the tripod collar. If you want one for the Nikon f/4 you have to pay another $200. That makes the Tamron an even better deal.
I used to be a Nikon lens snob but no longer. I have 3 fairly new Sigma lenses that are all outstanding and a new Nikon lens I expected to be excellent but is thoroughly mediocre, so I'm willing to try another third party lens.
