Transfer VHS?

Hello,

I recently got my d5100 and was wondering if I can use it to transfer my VHS tapes to digital. I have searched around but didn't find anything. Does anyone know if that is possible?

Thank you

well you could use it to convert cine by videoing the screen but the only way with video would be to video the TV screen which would give some strobing/fringing...you might try a big projector screen image and then watch on a small tv...you can buy an interface for about $20 to take it from your VCR to your computer and hence to DVD

You would have to gets video and audio out of your VHS and into your D5100. If you can do that then you could jus go straight to your computer. Or are you talking about just shooting directly off the TV and recording a movie of it on the D5100?

I don't think that would look very good though. It would work though. Just turn off all the lights so the room is very dark and set up with a tripod and use manual focus.

Are you thinking straight ....

I've been transferring a lot of old videos to DVD lately and using your D5100 would be difficult at best and you'd be shooting in Live View in 20 Minute (I think that's the time limit) segments. Better to spend $15 to $25 on a capture device and find some editing software (I use AVS).

I'm glad that I started doing this. My 30-year-old Betamax VCR had a major failure when I had 98% of everything moved to DVD! What litle I lost will not be missed.

The rest of the thought was "If you can do that then you could just go straight to your computer" If being the main word. There is no way to do that.

Hello

the way i did it was using a standalone capturing device such as advc300 from canopus, lots of people agree this device is perfect for this situation, but i must warn you, it's expensive...

you need to have some knowledge on capturing analog video using your pc, then you could use a software like vegas pro to edit and make the best out your analog videos, that requires some more knowledge and extra dollars...

other option would be using a standalone dvd recorder but it will lower the source video quality a lot...

what i can tell you for a fact is that you do not, most certainly want to use your camera/camcorder/projector to capture/digitize your analog videos, that is just wrong, plain and simple, considering modern technology.

you could also send the analog material to a video lab and they will do the job for you, but again, that requires some extra dollars...

if you decide to do this yourself, i'd suggest you visit VideoHelp.com - Forum, Guides, Tools and hardware lists lots of tutorials, free tools, guides....

almost forgot, you could also use a mini Dv camcorder as "pass through" device, assuming the pc has a fire wire connection, and an "input" plug on the camcorder, picture it like this: vhs... plugs to camcorder...firewire to pc...start capturing on windows. bit tricky but i did it, might not work with all Dv cams...

hope this helps
cheers
