Okay, today's photos.

This first one is in response to Rob's photo of Jemima Puddleduck. I loved Beatrix Potter characters when I was growing up, and still love them today. Below is Mr. Jeremy Fisher. I have had this figurine for a long time.

This next photo is of Buster. He had been hanging around our house for about 1-1/2 years. My spousal unit started feeding him when he showed up. He was about 6 months old at that time. We live in a rather rural area, and this little guy was probably dumped off because he was old enough to be neutered. He was really shy, coming to our house to eat and sleeping in the barn down the road. It took quite a while before he trusted us. During the super cold snap we had in January, he came hobbling up the driveway for food. Once he got on the porch, I picked him up, brought him in the house, and he has had no desire to leave since. He loves my husband and thinks I'm the evil one since I had to take him to the vet for shots and neutering. He's really cool. He has a total of 25 toes! 6 on each hind paw, 7 on his left front paw and 6 on his right front paw. Talk about being polydactyl!

Anyway, meet Buster.

We don't seem to have Mr. Jeremy Fisher in the curio cabinet. Which means another family-in-law person must have it. It wasn't like Grandma-in-law to have an incomplete set of anything! Going to have to secretly look at in-law's cabinets and shelves to see if they're really out-laws!

Is Mr. Jeremy Fisher dated on the bottom?

This next photo is of Buster. He has a total of 25 toes! 6 on each hind paw, 7 on his left front paw and 6 on his right front paw. Talk about being polydactyl!

I haven't had a polydactyl cat since I was a kid in the 1960s. At that time, I just figured they were mutants do to all the radioactive fallout from nuclear bomb testing. It wasn't until I was in college and taking a biochemistry course that I learned about polydactylism in cats.

I do have to admit, though, I have seen a lot of polydactyl cats, but Buster has more toes than most. My quadratoed cats have pretty much accepted him, even if he has 50% more toes than they have.

Just went and actually looked at all of them. Most seem to be dated 1948, but there's one dated 1946 and go all the way through 1976. However they're all made by F. Warne & Co Ltd., the publisher of the books. Maybe I don't have an out-law among my in-laws after all.

I thought they only existed in the FL Keys until I read that article.

Polydactylism is a recessive trait. It's also weird that cats can have a variety of numbers of toes on each paw. From articles that I have read, traits, such a color, toe number, etc. is much more complex in cats than in dogs. I think the 5-toed polydactyl cats are the most common.

This figurine is circa mid- to late=1960s.

Buster has no problems getting his photo taken. Flash does not bother him in the least.

2-18-13:

Took advantage of a beautiful sunny day and also having the day off.

I love the texture of frozen ice.

Went outside, and while driving, I spotted rows and stacks of plastic pipe made by a local plastic pipe company. It was the geometry and lighting that intrigued me.

Dreary, sleety/rainy/snowy day, but I already had my photo planned, so I really did not care that the weather was icky.

2-20-13:

Houseplants on window shelves can be opportunistic photo targets, especially when one is sick with a nasty cold caught from students in school.

The first is a flowering succulent that my teacher aide gave me last week.

Same here. Somehow my spousal unit seems to avoid getting any of these colds. The first year I taught, I was constantly catching or recovering from one cold or another. That went on from the end of October until mid-March.

Being sick forces one to look around and see what there is to photograph. Jenny was a good subject this afternoon. Much more photogenic than the cats were today.

I forgot I had her until I looked in the bookcase and saw her there with several of her other Beatrix Potter buddies. Do you have her?

No. We have Squirrel Nutkin, Mrs. Rabbit and Bunnies, Mrs. Flopsy Bunny, Timmy Tiptoes, Hunca Munca, Tabitha Twitchit and Miss Moppet, Jemima Puddle-Duck Made a Feather Nest, and Jemima Puddle-Duck who've you seen a photo of. The oldest are from 1948 and the newest, which I missed before, is from 1983.

Looks like we're going to have to start hitting the flea markets and stuff. Didn't realize we didn't have a complete set. Now it's just gonna drive me nuts. LOL!
