Really nice stuff Alan! Was the first shot (the one with the signal) taken on a former PRR line? I'm just wondering if the PRR positon light signals are coming down. It's very sad to see them fading away on the former N&W lines.

Brrrrr on the BNSF! Fine shots and I can feel my toes growing numb just looking at them. Is that the Columbia River? My western geography knowledge is sometimes lacking.

It is about 15 miles south of Harrisburg PA. The track runs along the Susquehanna River.

yakima river - between ellensburg and yakima - the highway has been given a scenic drive designation

first time that i spent a long time in yalima canyon 4 hrs. Usually just drive thru, 45 minutes for a 30 mile trip. 2 nd train
2 engines and half a dozen cars.

One of the many differences in train photography from 30 years ago vs today is the graffiti on railcars. Today it seems that most every car (except tank cars which make a poor canvas) is covered with this garbage.

Here's one from 1980, taken with my bulletproof Nikkormat FTn and Nikkor 50mm Lens on Kodachrome 64. Northwestern Station, Chicago, IL. Scanned on a not-so-good scanner. This beautiful terminal was razed in 1984 and replaced with the modern Ogilve Transportation Center.

My how thing have changed huh? I Miss the Chicago Northwestern and the old "F' units, they had a sound of their own like a GP7 had a sound of their own, similar but not the same.

These were shot as JPG's so I could only tone them over so much at the time. For those of you who don't know I'm shooting through a heavily green tint glass window.

Most often they put them on a lathe to true them, until they are out of minimum specification at which time they are replaced. I'm not sure how many miles they are good for in regular service, but I suspect that it's a whole lot. There are nearly 1.3 Million freight cars on U.S. railroads at this moment!
