I love my 105mm just because it works so well as a macro ( instructions say to turn off the VR when shooting macro) and a tele... The addition of VR is really icing? It is a great sharp lens ( I haven't tested it specifically, but haven't noticed it being soft). I have used it on my D700 most not much on my D800. The 105 will come out now that the winter is here in the Pacific NW... Low light and moss. JD

Hi Rick. Here are the sample shots that I took today. They are not the greatest samples that you've seen but I took them just to give you an idea. Both were taken in Aperture mode @ f8, ISO 100, 1/50 - 1/60, VR off, no flash, both were taken on a Tripod, D800E, Mirror up feature to minimize mirror slap vibration.
The 70-200mm f2.8 VRII was mounted on it's lens foot and the tripod was re-adjusted to give it a similar field of view. Both images were taken from the NEF file converted to jpg and resized to 1050 x 701 for web posting. The single focus point was on the blue mini van. The crop images are at 100% view. I couldn't even see or read the license plates of the vehicles except when I viewed them on my computer.
The distance is about 200 meters (give or take a few).I'm not sure if this will help answer your curiosity. Sharpness wise, I think they are ok. If you use them for portrait shots, they will be very sharp.

No problem Rick. Glad to help. I was also curious and didn't know what to expect. Having a good tripod and ballhead helped out a lot. I know my other cheaper tripod would have probably given me blurry shots. I now only use it for video purposes.
