Hi Rick. Here are the sample shots that I took today. They are not the greatest samples that you've seen but I took them just to give you an idea. Both were taken in Aperture mode @ f8, ISO 100, 1/50 - 1/60, VR off, no flash, both were taken on a Tripod, D800E, Mirror up feature to minimize mirror slap vibration.
The 70-200mm f2.8 VRII was mounted on it's lens foot and the tripod was re-adjusted to give it a similar field of view. Both images were taken from the NEF file converted to jpg and resized to 1050 x 701 for web posting. The single focus point was on the blue mini van. The crop images are at 100% view. I couldn't even see or read the license plates of the vehicles except when I viewed them on my computer.

The distance is about 200 meters (give or take a few).
I'm not sure if this will help answer your curiosity. Sharpness wise, I think they are ok. If you use them for portrait shots, they will be very sharp.
