For the time being, you might have to resort to Adobe's Camera Raw Converter. They usually are very fast to update this. You would then have to convert to DGN in order to view the files.
What I have done before when this happened to me (D7000 and D600 when new) is that I saved as raw+jpeg, open Mac viewer and reviewed my images with nef and jpeg side by side. So I could mark the Nefs that I wanted to work with and then open them in PS. So I'm pretty certain that updated versions of PS and LR can convert the files, if you just want to peak, you'll have to work with Jpegs for now.
Been there and knows it's a bit and some more frustrating.
Enjoy your D850.
Indeed, they explained this as well.
However, this is a royal pain in the ass (pardon my language).
Eventually, these little nits will be ironed out. However, it is more than a little distressing to spend $5K and have to put up with these inconveniences.... especially for work related projects. Work flow goes into the circular file.
I am not happy about any of this by any stretch of the imagination. However, I know they want to fix it, so I will have some faith in Nikon that it will be resolved in a timely manner. They are keenly aware of it.
Regarding Apple, I cannot comment on what comes first the Chicken or the Egg. Something the two companies will have to work out.
BTW, Camera Raw is sold by Yong Li not Apple.
