Ok my d5100 is only a couple of months old and the error press shutter release button shows up when i switch it on. When i try to take a pic i hear a small click but nothing happens. I feel very let down by this camera as i was away on holiday when it happened and missed out on taking some great pics. Can anyone help me please?

I'm sure you have checked your manual. It says to release shutter, and if error persist or appears frequently, consult Nikon-authorized service representative. Sorry but its not something you can correct yourself. Your camera needs serviceing.

Thanks for that mark. I did check the manual and it does say contact nikon. Very dissapointed as the camera has only taken about 50 photos. :-(

Have you checked your battery to make sure it's fully charged? The shutter release will do some funny things if it's not fully charged up. Just a suggestion.

Just a thought make sure your lens is on properly- sometimes you might hit the release button and twist it a bit - bingo error message

Before you send it off, pop the memory card out and CLOSELY check the contacts.

Use a different card if you have to just to make sure the problem is not the memory card.

Hope this helps.

I just had a similar problem on my D5100 and was advised to send it back for repair. After comparing mine side by side to another at a camera shop, (remove lens and with camera on press shutter release button) the lower right corner of the mirror was binding with the stop. We were able to GENTLY pry the lower right corner of the mirror away from the stop (from the right, not underneath) and now it is functioning flawlessly.

Hope this helps, I was able to save a lot of time and not miss taking pictures at my daughter's volleyball tournament.

NICE!! Happy to read the result of this thread! Just stinks that it seems like the lower end cameras are having some strange issues recently. Dunno what it is, but I am starting to see more pop up randomly lately.

Thanks for this. I was having the same problem and missed taking pictures at my daughter's graduation party. Fixed it based on your suggestion and now it is working with no problem!

My D40x has started doing this too. If I move the little red gear under the base plate half a rotation, it'll work for half a dozen pictures then stop again. I took it to a repair shop and they were unable to fix it. They suggested sending it off to another shop they know of but for the price they quoted for fixing it, I could buy a new body!

I thought it was a wrap. I have a shoot coming up and boston and all types of deadlines. Found this forum and I'm good. Just take of the lens, turn the camera on, and hit the silver button like you would if you were taking a picture. BOOM! Thank RICO! You save me a night of depression and a lot of time and MONEY!!! WOO HOO!!! lol
