Re: Image size on the D4?! HELPPPPPPP

I understand that t he D4 is a 16 and the 7100 is a 24 but I don't know what you mean by "viewing at the corresponding DPI zoom/scale"...

check this link: Printing images - what file size do you need? Resolution, pixel sizes and file sizes compared for print

do not confuse the files size (3mb) with the size of the files in megapixels (3300x4200=13.8mp)
a file size of (3mb) will be able to produce large prints
check with your processor on the dpi they want for prints, the 350 dpi seems high.

I thought you "pros" would know this?? Anyhow, your expectation of a full frame camera to have bigger files then a DX camera, is the wrong way to think. As has been pointed out, your D7100 has a 24mp sensor; therefore, will logically yield bigger files. 16mp is 16mp, no matter how far apart you spread them. When you do the math, you are getting the full resolution of your camera (4928 x 3280 = 16.16). If you look at other FF cameras in Nikons line up, like the D750 or D800, both of those cameras will produce bigger files because they have more megapixels. You are not going to get bigger files JUST because you have a FF camera. My X-Pro1 yields the same size files as you stated in your post. It's 16mp. My X10 yields smaller files because it is 12mp. I don't think you have anything to worry about to be honest.

I'm not looking for bigger files, and we have established the 16v24 size difference. I understand all of that-- my concern is that I purchased this camera refurbished (always a gamble with Nikon's 30 policy v Cannon's 1 year policy) so I want to make sure it is functioning properly in my 30 day window. I looked at page 444 which suggests my files should be twice as large as I am getting. However when I pull an exported image back into lightroom, the file dimensions (4928x3280) are unchanged. I'm ok sounding like my blonde self if, in the end of the day, I'm not out 4 grand. Thanks for your help!!!!! You pointed out info Nikon specialists didn't even understand! xoxo

Have you looked at your setup menu? There is somewhere hidden there a place where you can specify how much you want the camera to compress your jpeg files. Maybe this is what should be looked at, making certain that you are not using the stronger compression that would give you smaller files.

The file size will also depend on the amount of detail. I just shot a blank wall with my D7100, and also shot my office desk with a bunch of stuff on it. I exported it to Jpeg in LR with your 100% quality and 350dpi export setting.

The blank wall yielded a 5.97MB file, and the office shot with lots of detail yielded a 7.9MB file. There is nothing wrong with your camera.

Provided that the file that you get on your memory card is
    - both RAW
    - is about 2/3 (i.e. 16/24) size on the D4, compared to the file on the D7100
then there should be basically nothing wrong with your camera.

Differences regarding the filesize could eventually come from two other issues:
    - a very rich detail capture vs an almost flat capture - however filesize differences should not be huge
    - if you are mounting a DX lens, your camera can go into DX mode (I suppose the D4 does) and only take the center part of your capture (this, you would realize it with a lower number of pixels (about 44% of the total pixels of your sensor (i.e. 6.4M pixels)) - i don't thinkthis is what you are reporting in your post.

Any other difference that you find, other than the file on the memorycard (f.i. output of Lightroom), is unlikely to be linked to your camera.

Btw. You mention page 444 of a manual, but not having the manual didn't allow me to relate to that

Post edit: remembered that the D4 does offer also a compressed NEF file, which the D7100 doesn't - so please check that the D4 settings for the RAW file (NEF) are uncompressed, if you want to compare filesizes.
